Title: Alabama Basketball Updates
Post by: Marshal Dillon on April 20, 2014, 01:06:25 PM
Some of this info has been around but I had not seen it. Sorry if this is old news for some of you. I will put the stories on this thread instead of multiple threads.

A few gaps remain, but Alabama's 2014-15 non-conference schedule already looks a lot like the one that left the Crimson Tide below .500 before the start of SEC play this past season.

There's a connection, of course, as Alabama will square off against a number of the same opponents in accordance with the respective home-and-home agreements it signed. That means the Crimson Tide will be road-tripping to Wichita State and Xavier and hosting UCLA and South Florida.

More interesting stuff.

The fallout from Alabama's 13-19 basketball season came with negative chatter.

That would fall under coach Anthony Grant's definition of the "sideshow." But it never reached the level of a coaching change.

Athletics director Bill Battle gave his vote of confidence a day after the season ended in a SEC tournament loss to LSU. Battle cited Grant's character, philosophy and approach to the game when announcing there would be no change in the leadership.

This is the disturbing news. Shannon Hale breaks his foot. Happened during spring break.

Quote
Hale won't be able to put weight on the foot for four-six weeks, Grant said.

Good news about Nick Jacobs, he's still hanging in there. He is absolutely critical for our success next year.

Quote
Details were scant when Nick Jacobs' leave of absence was announced late in the regular season.

Since the year ended, the junior has been around Coleman Coliseum and has resumed his strength and conditioning workouts, coach Anthony Grant said. His status with the team remains unchanged.

Jacobs was at the year end BB banquet and have been working out with the team. Rumors were grades were his issue.

I hope he gets whatever problem he has worked out and comes back strong for his senior season. He is not a breast of a rebounder but he is a good offensive weapon. I have always thought he would be a good player if he had a good post player under the basket with him like he did with Greene his freshman year.

Yep, J and I were talking about that yesterday. I think everyone would like to see him regain the form from his freshman year.

I think Jacobs can be a dominating presence around the basket, rebounding and scoring on that hook he has but he has to be more consistent. Another big body under the basket would definitely help him out.

An interesting 2015 commit. I would feel better if someone like Texas, Florida, Georgetown, etc., had offered a scholarship.

Quote
After hinting at the possibility last week, Donta' Hall made it official.

The 6-foot-8 shot blocker from Luverne on Thursday committed to Alabama's basketball signing class of 2015, BamaOnLine first reported.

UAB, Mississippi State, Troy had offered the 4-star prospect as Auburn, Georgia and West Virginia all showed interest.

Today Jackson Davis of Lexington, KY announces who he will sign with. He is a 6-8 220 lb power forward. He has narrowed his choices to Bama, Butler and Rice. He is arguably the best unsigned player still available. He has offers from AZ St, Florida, Vandy, Creighton, Georgia, Auburn, Oklahoma St and many others.

The experts think it is down to us and Butler. He seemed to be set on Butler until his A Day visit last week. The other four signees were there with him and had a great time. He and his family were very impressed. After our visit he cancelled visits with Az St and Vandy. This week he cancaeled an in home visit with Billy Donovan of Florida and moved his announcement date to this afternoon.

We have four good recruits and two transfers coming in. If we can get Davis this will be a huge late signing period pickup.

The picture below is from A Day. Davis is on the far right. L-R Garrett, Mitchell, Coleman, Norris and Davis.

A lot closer to Butler than Tuscaloosa for the kid & his parents.

I've been wondering the same thing. There has to be changes if the team is going to get better, otherwise it's just business-as-usual.

I got something up my sleeve Bama don't worry 😎😎 #Fab5StillAlive #JustWaitOnIt

Devin Mitchell is not giving up on Jackson Davis even after Davis committed to Butler yesterday. I am not sure if Davis actually signed his Butler papers or not. If you don't know Mitchell refers to the four signed recruits and Davis as the FAB 5.

Mitchell seems like a good kid. He committed to Bama early and has been recruiting ever since. I like his attitude. I am going to love him if he can shoot the 3 pointer like they say he can.

CBS Sports list Ricky Tarrart as one of the five transfers to watch next season. They also mention Michael Kessens. I an exciting about both of these guys. A 6-9 guy who can score. It has been a while since we have had one of those.

Quote
Help is on the way for Anthony Grant as Tarrant should be an instant offensive contributor for the Crimson Tide. The 6-2 guard averaged 15.7 points two years ago at Tulane and had 11 games in excess of 20 points. Also keep on eye on Longwood transfer Michael Kessens, who at 6-9 will give Alabama another interior presence that should be able to produce right away in the SEC.

The makeup of this team is going to be so different from what we've seen over the last couple of years, particularly last year. You have to wonder how long it will take for them to gel and develop chemistry. It will be interesting to watch them grow.

I just hope we can keep being updated on the team as it grows. RTR!

I never understood why the Tide did not recruit Tarrant from HS. He is from Birmingham, was an excellent player, was drooling to play for the Tide and we blew him off. Maybe that's an indicator of why the team has struggled the last few years.
