California has hired Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin to replace Mike Montgomery and will announce the hire at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

Cuonzo Martin, who spent three seasons at Tennessee, will be Cal's new coach.
Martin has spent the past three seasons in Knoxville and led the Volunteers to the NCAA tournament this season. He was previously the coach at Missouri State.

Martin went 63-41 in three seasons at Tennessee, including a 24-13 mark and NCAA regional semifinal appearance this season.

Wow! Caught me off-guard on this one. I have to wonder why he left UT to go to Cal. He has no connection to the West Coast. Something smells bad here.

The UT fans were not sold on Martin. He went on a nice run late this year to the Sweet 16 but UT barely made the Tournament. Reading some of the comments from UT posters on other sites they think they can get a better coach. I think I agree with them.

Yeah, I was thinking he has caught a lot of flack at UT during his tenure so he got out while the getting was good. I think the UT fans over-rate their BB program's importance and ability to get a very good coach.

 :duh:

I know it's shocking to hear such blasphemy about UT BB.

Coaching rumors to replace Martin at UT are starting to come out. These are names I am seeing and my comments.

Greg Marshall - Wichita State: He has been passed over by UT in the last two coaching hires. I do not think he will be interested this time. We has WS on a roll. They have become an elite program and they are treating him well. Much easier to win at WS than in the SEC. No football program to compete with and they have good fan support.

Ben Howland - unemployed: Fired as UCLA coach last year. His name surfaces for every coaching hire. I don't think he is anyone's first choice.

Archie Miller - Dayton: He is a hot coach right now. Dayton is a good basketball school. He could be interested if UT decides to ante up.

Donnie Tyndall - Southern Miss: He will take the job if a reasonable offer is made IMO.

Michael White - La Tech: He will take the job if a reasonable offer is made IMO.

Interesting take...

FWIW, I would take the job if a reasonable offer is made... but it would take a lot... ;)

Byrd ain't going anywhere. He has been at Belmont for over 25 years and he IS Belmont basketball. I think he is at least 60 years old. Good, solid coach, I don't know why no one has tried to hire hi in the past.
