Title: Greg McElroy - Combine Chatter
Post by: ssmith general on March 07, 2011, 05:18:22 AM
"Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy worked out at the NFL Combine on Sunday. McElroy suffered an injury to his throwing hand in the Senior Bowl, preventing him from throwing at the combine. TideSports caught up with him in Indianapolis to check on the injury and see if analysts think he will get drafted.

Workouts
40-yard dash: 4.84 seconds
Vertical jump: 33 inches
Broad jump: 8 feet, 11 inches
*McElroy was not able to throw at the combine due to the injury he suffered in the Senior Bowl

Draft projection: 6th-7th round

What the experts are saying:
"If he does get drafted, it will be late. I like him a lot. You can tell he's a competitor. He does a lot of the little things right. His footwork is good. You don't have to coach him much. He has great anticipation. He gets it. He really knows the game, and he's a winner. The kid just wins.
"Arm strength is overrated, but when it affects your accuracy, then it becomes a problem, and I think it affects his accuracy. He tries to overcompensate at times, and his footwork isn't the same when he's trying to drive the ball downfield or fit it into a tight spot. He just can't make some throws that he should be able to or have to make in the NFL."
-Todd McShay, ESPN draft expert"

So, McShay isn't a believer in GMac.  It's probably an accurate assessment, but when I read "overcompensation" I lost interest.  I hope GMac gets an opportunity, but it looks like he's destined to bench work...

Very true.

With all those compliments and they say he will ride the bench. I am not sure what this means. If you have good attributes your going to ride the bench and be drafted in the 6th or 7th round. He is a winner and your going to put him on the bench? I doubt that. RTR!

The pros realize you have to be able to throw the ball deep.

Confession time.
Many skeletons were buried* when TS died.  Among others of mine, last fall I predicted that GMac would go in the second round.  I'm so embarrassed. :-[ :-[ :-[ :-* :-[ :P :-[ :-[ :-[

I can see this happening now. His mechanics are good. I really feel he goes higher than projected. RTR!

Greg is one of all time favorite players. Not only was he a good player he represented the University as well as anyone I can remember.

I always thought of him as a good college QB. I hope he surprises me but I do not see him as a starter in the NFL. However, if I am a coach I want players like him on my team. I expect him to have a good career as a back-up. NFL QB's has a short life span these days. Most do not make it throgh a full year without missing a game or two. Greg would be the type of QB you could put in and let him manage a game or two with few mistakes and keep you competitive until the starter returns. He would also be great with a headset and clip broad. I will be pulling for him.

Headsets and clipboards can be the beginning of the making of a good head coach. GMAC has all the mental tools for that.

What ever happens I wish him the best, he was one my favorites to wear the Crimson jersey. He did not have the same jerk wad attitude that our last couple of QB's had.

GMac made it look easy, and it was a very complex offense.  Only a few times did he misstep of make other mental mistakes.  His mechanics were outstanding.

We were fortunate that he stayed and played healthy for so long.  I thought he'd get knocked out of a game LONG before he did.
