Title: Welcome
Post by: SUPERCOACH on February 28, 2011, 02:50:06 AM
Please ignore our mess while we try to get this site up and going.  I was not planning on building a web site this weekend, and it is a pretty big undertaking to do it right.  Hopefully I at least have enough forum functionality up and running so that the homeless tidesports forum members will have somewhere to go now that the site has been turned off.

You may notice some blue buttons and background colors from time to time.  This is because the default theme for the forum is blue.  I put together a quick and dirty red version that we can use until I can get some polished graphics in place.  Blue is just unacceptable.

For now, the site rules will be the same as tidesports.  I will put together an official site policy when I get a chance.

Thanks.

Here is a copy of what I just posted over at tidesports to announce the site:

I was able to scramble and cobble together a basic site over the weekend.  It is up and running, but I did see some performance issues from time to time.  Not as bad as this place can be with all of the ads, but still unacceptable by my standards.  I can make the performance better, but it will take some time to upgrade the server.  I have no problem doing that if it turns out that people are interested in the site.

Also, the site is still under construction and is not the most polished looking place.  But, I can and will eventually make that better too if people sign up and we get some activity going.  It is not too bad, it is just the basic forum theme that came with the software.  I did manage to change most of the buttons and graphics from blue to red though.  Blue is just totally unacceptable.  :)

As for site rules, I anticipate having very similar rules to this place.  Basically, if my kids were to stumble onto the site or look over my shoulder, I would not want to be ashamed of what they see.  That is the bottom line, and if it violates that rule, then it won't be allowed.  A good rule of thumb:  if you would get arrested, detained, or ejected for doing it inside Bryant-Denny on game day, then we don't want you doing it over there either.  Fax Cam Girl, however, is perfectly acceptable.

I'm not bashing any of the other sites that allow pretty much anything.  They are just not for me.  I think the Internet is a big enough place that we can have a wild wild west site like http://www.woolyal.com for those who are interested in that type of thing, and a clean site for those of us who are not.

If someone consistently violates the rules over on my site, I will probably suggest that they go over to woolyal, if that is OK with them.  Perhaps if people are offended by what goes on over there and post a complaint to them, maybe they could refer them over to my site.  I don't see any reason why people couldn't participate in both sites if they want.  Just please keep it clean over on my site.

When you register it will send you an activation e-mail.  You will have to click on a link in the e-mail to activate your account.  This helps me to block against spam bots that do nothing but sign up and post messages with ads.  It may take anywhere from 5 minutes up to an hour to get the e-mail, but you should get it eventually.  This is one of the performance areas I will need to work on.

If you have any problems you can send an e-mail to admin over there (@crimsonredsports.com).

I will try to go through my private messages today and get in touch with everyone who has contacted me.

And finally, for those of you who don't give me the TLDR, here is the site address:

http://www.crimsonredsports.com (http://www.crimsonredsports.com)

Guys, I have no idea if this server is going to be able to handle the traffic today, or even if there will be any traffic for that matter.  But I had to get something out there before they pull the plug over on tidesports and cut off all lines of communication.  Please bear with me if it goes down and check back often.

Thanks.

I always ignored the Ed issue - what is the Ed level?

Here is the story, please correct me if I have some of the details wrong.  I think it is particularly relevant considering what happened on Friday.

When the Tuscaloosa News announced they were going to create a new pay site called Tide Sports Extra, a lot of people were pretty ticked off.  Mostly because Cecil Hurt's column's were only going to be available on the pay site.  Any way, some lurker signed up as ed, made one post, and has never been heard from again:

"ditto...  I'm gone."

This was in response to a post threatening to leave the site.  That was the one and only ed post.  ed became legendary.  I don't know if he was a real person who only made that one post, or if it was someone else who just created a fake account to make a joke.

So, in honor of ed, over here if you have 1 and only 1 post, you will be at the ed level.  Once you get to post number 2 you will be a gilmer.  I don't know what the other levels will be after that.  We can all decide later as a group.

Definitely.  In fact I am going to chunk the whole theme and build one from scratch when I get the time.  The tide sports shut down caught me by surprise and I was scrambling just to get something installed.

I've been a member of Tidesports for about 4 years
(although for some reason it says I just joined in 2010)
I lost my post count with their new format. Anyway - I don't
post a LOT although I do post.  I'm excited about
this place though and will help if you need it.

Yes, I did.  I missed the big send-off over there.  Very sad.

If they had wanted to do it right, I think they should have had a giant thread-merge, ending with one massive thread.

Thanks.

This thread will be going into the Hall of Fame later on tonight, since it is the very first thread over here.  So anybody that wants to be in should go ahead and post if you haven't already.  If you have not registered yet you better hurry.

BTW, our Hall of Fame forum is probably going to be called Bryant Museum.  We are probably going to go with a campus theme for our forum names.  I will probably rename the General forum to the Quad in a little while.

I didn't setup any accounts at any of the other forums, I was too busy trying to cobble this place together.  But maybe some of you guys that have accounts on the other forums could go on there and post an invite to all of the old tide sports gang to come over if they want to be included in our first Hall of Fame thread.

Thanks for the help.

I can see from your attachment where it is supposed to be.  Here is what's happening.  The boxes to the right with the Most E-cred and Top posters are hoarding in on the profile stuff.  In other word, the change profile button in under the Top poster box.  I use explorer, but wouldn't think that has anything to do with it.  It might be some type of screen resolution issue.

Switch over to compatibility view.  Take a look at the new sticky thread about bleeding over on to other pages.  It shows you how to do it if you are not sure.

I will have to figure out why the site requires compatibility view...

If that doesn't help let me know.

Thanks, and sorry for the inconvenience.

I think you have to be on version 8 for compatibility view.  I think the fundamental problem is just that the web site is too wide for some folks.  I will try to create a narrow theme for you guys when I get a chance.

For now, maybe I could fix your avatar picture for you.  It looks like you can post OK.  Are there any other issues you are seeing besides not being able to click the button?

It's a great thing you are doing and I'm just trying to help so the newcomers will not have to deal with it.  I used the compatibility view option to no avail.  Then I shrank the boxes to the right and could finally see the 'Change Profile' option, yet it still didn't work out for me.  If you can fix it, it'll be okay by me, and would 'preciate it.  Here is the URL;  http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_r_XtPU-F-5o/SeRN075n6uI/AAAAAAAAB5o/J_hnCDn-C3c/s400/stars_02.jpg

Title: Re: Welcome

It looks like the button is working now, but the picture won't upload to the server.  I think the server is just too overloaded right now.  It is not our site so much, but all of the other random sites that just so happen to be on the same server we are on.

I am very doubtful that godaddy will be able to fix this for us, or would even make an attempt to do so.  I am going to try and move the whole site over to a dedicated server as soon as I can.  For those who don't know, with a dedicated server I have full control of the machine.  There won't be any other web sites or anything else on there, except for the stuff that I put on there.  That should fix all of our performance problems.

I would like some ecred.  ;D I enjoyed TS, but all good things come to an end. I read woolyal sometimes, but it's a little too much for me. I get tired of seeing the f-bomb every other post. I hope this pacle takes off. Thanks for the work, Coach. Do I get some Ed-Cred now?  :-*

I see that 55 (Double Nickel) joined, but only posted once (ed-like).  I'd enjoy having him here to contribute too.  Push the invite.  I tried.

And we need Tidal Surge's recruiting-thread skills.  That'd be nice.

Lol that is what he told me about a week ago.  He must be really working hard on that.

Maybe we can build a special recruiting section over here when we get some time.  I'm guessing that a forum is probably not the best way to track all of that stuff.  Maybe we have a blog post about each recruit with their picture, bio, stats, etc.  And then everyone can comment on that one recruit instead of having one big recruiting thread.  We could put a recruiting link on the front page that goes to this special section.

Supercoach:

I joined this site on day one. Like many I joined several sites and kicked the tires. WA is not for me. I was concerned with this site for a few days but those concerns are gone. You  have done an amazing job. I like the posters so far and there is constat activity.

Keep up the good work. e-cred for you.

My concerns took care of themself. Part of it was you were in the new stages of a new site and making adjustments, changes, etc. The other part was me learning to navigate the site.

I like it here. I will let you know if I have any suggestions.

Keep up the good job.

It's funny. I was a member of TSE from the beginning so I have a subscription to Rivals. I've been there MAYBE 4 times since the changeover and haven't posted once. I did register at several sites at the beginning however, I haven't been back since I came here. I came here and that was it.

I appreciate everything you've done Coach! What a great job!

Your avatar stinks.  And so do 99.9% of your posts!   ;)  How's that for an introductory post?   Howdy, CP.

I never liked your current avatar, FWIT.  The rising phoenix bird is synonomous with your persona.  Just seems to be a match.  Just my recommendation.

Too many new people here to remember me, but suffice to say that along with the general aka coonass aka pirate, CP and many others, I joined TS (thank God that place is history) just before Shula got the ax.  I'm so old, I don't remember what year that was.   ;D

P.S.  Thanks for the referral here.  You should get recruiting points or something.

#1Tidefan!  Hi old friend!  Hope you're well.  Missed you.

CP - anyway to tell who "applauds" or "boos" you?  Or totally anonymous.  So, if I tell you I gave you tons of e-cred, you have no way of knowing if I'm telling the truth or lying?  heh heh heh.

Well, I must reciprocate...and also give one to my friend "A".

Thanks for the welcome.  I can't believe it, either.  I actually read Dad's initial post, then went to the last page to offer condolences.  I didn't read the pages in between.   If that's the way they're doing business over there, I'll leave my piddly two or three existing posts there and just deactivate my account.

In other words - I'm home @ Crimson Red.   ;)

Sure, you do.  It's likely you had a confidence factor due to a couple of certain a-holes.  Yours truly being one of them, probably.

You'd be good with your background and enthusiasm.  Hey - if I'm endorsing you, that in itself speaks volumes!    ;D
