Title: Windows 7
Post by: ssmith general on April 05, 2011, 06:23:18 AM
I hate it, it's stupid.  It's made for really old people or children.  It makes funny noises, the icons are huge and I cant make them smaller with changing the resolution which doesnt look right.  Why can't they have a "I'm not an idiot" setting? What was wrong with XP?  Can I get a "classic" view?

Windows 8 is on the way already (http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/04/04/tantalizing-hints-windows-8-hit-internet/?test=faces).

I remember saying basically the same thing about XP when it came out.  It is a trend, and unfortunately it will continue.

Fail.  Windows is incompatible with instant anything.

At least XP has the classic view.  I just hate not knowing my way around.  And the icons drive me crazy.

I love Windows 7!!

As an IT Consultant it is my job to stay current on the latest technologies. I will say that Windows 7 certainly has its shortcomings, but so has every other version. The thing that frustrates people is that as soon as they learn a new version it is out of date. If they are going to continue putting out new versions, they should attempt to keep the structure and basic layout consistent.

^^^THIS^^^

It really annoys me that every new version has to have a different way to get to all of the different settings.  It isn't easier, just different.  And the Microsoft trend of making assumptions and doing things for me really irritates me.  They have no idea what I am trying to accomplish and it is very arrogant for them to assume that they know what I am trying to do.  I know they are trying to make it more approachable for the novice but they are doing so at the risk of alienating the guys who have been around for all these years.

If I could get smaller icons I would be more open to it.

Surely there is a way to do that.

you would think.  Even worse, there is this option it says "make your icons bigger or smaller" but you can only make them BIGGER.  It's ridiculous.  I like icons on my desktop, lots of them, and I like them small.

Try this:

1.  Hover over an icon on your desktop.
2.  Hold down control.
3.  Hold down the left mouse button.
4.  Roll the wheel on your mouse.

I just tried it and was able to make them as small or large as I wanted.

Interesting read. I never use Bing anyway, but certainly interesting.

I was told yesterday by my VA Rep that Bing is a lot better than Google. I don't know but if that is what she trusts I guess I would too. RTR!

Depends on your definition of "better"

The average person won't care about the size of the icons.

My favorite thing about windows 7 is the instant access to the desktop.  It's the only thing I learned in our 3 hour "training" with the trainer at school.

My personal opinion is that you can't go wrong with Google if you simply want search results. Microsoft has their own interests covered first and then objectivity second. I also find Microsoft products to be cumbersome and intrusive. Google can be intrusive as well but they are more up front and open about it so you know what you are getting. Those are just my initial thoughts. It's really all a matter of preference. If you are looking for something on the internet, they will all get you there. It's just a matter of how.

Boy, I couldn't agree more.  I saw it when Hedduk put it on his computer and said "no way!"  - I'll keep my XP.  And I loaded the new Office (2007, I think) and hated it.  Went back to my old Office which at least I knew how to use.  My computer is now 5 years old and doesn't have a huge amount of memory so it's almost full - too full to even run disk defrag.

My Ipad 2 will be here in 14 days.  Once I master it, my next computer will be a MAC.  I have cussed Bill Gates so much I just don't have any more breath to waste on him.

And PS,  I don't think Windows 7 is made for "old people".  Hedduk can't figure out anything about how to do things and cusses it constantly - he is having weird screen colors and even program problems.  His computer is at least two years newer than mine but may hit the trash first! :D
