TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- If he'd have known he would be playing college football at a place like Alabama -- or anywhere for that matter -- Alec Morris might have started down the path toward early graduation at the beginning of his junior year.

At that point, Morris, Alabama's newest freshman quarterback, was just trying to get on the field with the varsity squad at Allen High in Texas.

"I wasn't even 100 percent sure I was going to play college football," Morris said. "It all just happened pretty quickly."

Morris, much like former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy -- who was forced to play backup behind Chase Daniel until his senior year of high school -- was buried on the depth chart through his early years of high school. Ahead of him were Matt Brown, now a sophomore at TCU, and Tucker Carter, who helped lead Allen to a 2008 state championship.

Everything changed after Morris attended one of Alabama's camps during the summer. He didn't leave with an official offer, but he was encouraged by the praise he received about his mechanics, which were described to him as "flawless."

Welcome to championshipville, Alec.

Well we hope so. I notice the mechanics again kind of like Greg brought to the table. Harder worker and patience of course, we shall see! RTR!

The way ESPN national recruiting analyst Tom Luginbill sees it, Alabama's August could feature a heated competition for the backup quarterback job between Ely and Morris.

"He fits more of their mold of what they want their quarterback to look like, what they want him to be," Luginbill said of the 6-foot-3, 235-pound Morris. "I think this thrusts him right into the fray to hopefully create an environment of competition that those coaches want to have.

"It won't take very long before he enters himself into the mix."
Let's hope Lunginbill is right.
