Alabama is the top program in college football, according to talk radio host Paul Finebaum. In this Q&A, Finebaum talks about Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Florida and Tennessee football programs.

Is Alabama football better off today than four years ago?
Finebaum: “Yes, and maybe better off than it has ever been. That is a sacrilegious statement to make, and I only covered Coach Bryant’s last two years, but I really don’t know if Alabama has ever been more important in football.

“I may read this in a couple of days or weeks and wonder why I said what I just got through saying. Even Alabama in the mid-60s had other peers. I think Notre Dame was on the same level, Penn State, Texas and depending on the year, maybe Oklahoma. Alabama always had major competitors.

“I think, right now, Alabama is really standing alone in college football..."

I totally agree with him that Notre Dame was the premier school back in those days but Bama was the darkhorse in that race and answered the challenge in everyway.

Bear was a great coach but I have to put CNS right beside him anymore. "Great pair says the Bear" and I'm not talking about Golden Flake and Coca Cola either.RTR!!

PSU and ND of the 70's and 80's had a couple big games a year on their schedule. If they managed to get through those the Northeast AP votes would carry them into the Top 5 so that a bowl victory would lead to a NC.  Even still, PSU managed to get maybe 1 and ND only a couple in those 2 decades. Both teams have been irrelevant since.

Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, USCw, and FSU may have each had a couple of shots at NCs but none have dominated the way Bama did in the 70's and now the CNS era. Also the CGS era was more impressive than any of these teams have managed to string together except for the USCw run 6 or 7 years ago.

The 1960s were very special, and nobody will ever replace Coach Bryant.

That's that.
But today is today, and ALABAMA has never been better.  That's that.  Roll Tide.

“I’d say Auburn is in better shape. Auburn four years ago was hemorrhaging. It had a paper tiger as a leader; it had someone who had checked out three or four years earlier. I think (Gene) Chizik is respected by a lot of people.

What a kidder that Finebaum is!

Indeed he is. Respected by such upstanding people as Pat Dye, Bobby Lowder, Cecil Newton, Jimmy Rane, etc.  :tinfoil:

I don't think there is enough room on this site to name all those who "respect" Cheeznip.

Excellent points! The Tide was dominant in the 1960's & 1970's. Alabama won the most games in th 60's then again in the 70's. It was something like this:

1960's  Alabama 96 wins
           Texas     95 wins

1970's  Alabama    104 wins
           Oklahoma  103 wins

Also, look at all the great teams from that era and the coaches:

Notre Dame   Ara Parsegian
Texas            Darrell Royal
USC              John Mckay
Oklahoma     Barry Switzer (1970's)
Nebraska      Bob Devaney & Tom Osborne

Only Saban can compare to that group of coaches among todays coaches. Stoops might enter that exalted field, but he needs to relearn how to teach defense.

One thing Bryant has over Saban is longevity.  Let's hope Saban continues to work on that aspect of his legacy.

That is something I was going to mention but forgot. Coach Bryant showed up when he was 44, and Saban was 56 when he arrived. I don't see Saban doing a Bobby Bowden and hanging around forever. I expect him to stay till age 65 to 67, maybe. He has plenty of money and the lake home in Georgia for retirement. The most encouraging thing I heard him say was something he said last year, that he was enjoying what he did and still had a great desire to keep working,
