Phillip Sims entered the 2011 football season in an open competition for the starting quarterback job at Alabama, and ended the season firmly entrenched as the backup to A.J. McCarron, who had just been named the Offensive MVP of the BCS National Championship Game.

Now that Sims has decided to transfer to another school, his high school coach says he believes Sims was a better quarterback than McCarron but lost the competition for the starting job because he wasn't from the state of Alabama.

"If it's a close competition between an in-state guy and an out-of-state guy, the in-state guy is getting the job," said Oscar Smith (Virginia) High School head coach Richard Morgan in an interview with The Virginian-Pilot. "Phillip was in a situation where I thought he was the better quarterback, but he was the out-of-state guy. That's just the way it works in college." ...

As my six-year-old daughter is wont to say, what a crock of poo.  Say what you want about Nick Saban — and I’m quite certain many, many things will be said in the comments section below this post — but his singular focus when it comes to on-field matters is getting the best players into both huddles in order to give his team the best opportunity to win on any given Saturday.  It would be literally impossible, I believe, for the three-time BcS champion coach to care less from what city/state/country/continent/planet/universe a player hailed.

The QB battle was very close last year. Many members of this forum, myself included, though Sims had a good Spring Practice and would win the starting position in the fall. Even CNS and the staff had trouble determining who should start. The ultimate decision was not made until the 2nd game against Penn State. After the Penn State game even Sims supporters like me knew AJ was the better QB.

What bothers me most about the coaches commentts is it could hurt P. Sims. Sims is trying to get a hardship waiver to allow him to play next year and not have to sit out a year. When the coach says he would still be at Alabama if he was getting playing time does not help Sims situation.

I hope Sims goes on and has a good career at UVA. I think he is a good kid and a good player. I hope the coach stops talking. He is only making things worse for his former player.

No doubt that coach is correct. Other well-known Alabama QB's born in our state include:

Joe Namath
Terry Davis (first wishbone QB)
Andrew Zow
Riley Smith (1935 All American and a truly great QB)
Steve Sloan (1965 All American QB)
