ESPN Sources: Bobby Petrino out as coach

Quote
Bobby Petrino will not return as head football coach at Arkansas, multiples sources have told ESPN.com's Chris Low.

The university has called an 8:15 p.m. ET press conference at which time athletic director Jeff Long will announce Petrino will not be back.

Assistant head coach Taver Johnson had been placed in charge of the program while Petrino was on leave and sources told ESPN.com's Low that Johnson will remain in charge. The sources said that Long has informed the coaching staff that he would like to keep the assistants in place through the rest of spring practice and then open up the coaching search to see what options are available at this point.

Wow, I have to say I am surprised. I didn't think Long would pull the trigger. What is most interesting to me is that they want the rest of the staff to stay on through spring practice and

then open up the coaching search to see what options are available at this point.

I'm not surprised at all. When you look at Bama's past history, Mike Dubose, Mike Price, Wimp Sanderson, and Mark Gottfried. Did any of them get any forgiveness of what they did, no, and Petrino didn't deserve any better either.

It's a sad ending for a young coach that had nothing but a bright future in front of him at Arkansas, but a bad decisision has taken care of all of that but the biggest loss is his family.  :(

I bet the meltdown on the Arkansas boards is epic.

I watched the presser.  The AD was very forthcoming.

Once the AD learned that Petrino was having an affair before she was hired (and he served on the search committee), it was pretty much over.  He already knew Petrino lied to him about the accident and covered the affair.  Then when he learned of the payment ("gift") of $20,000 to the "young lady" by Petrino, it made his decision easier.

Wow.

The Arkansas board is barely loading.  I did see one suggestion to hire Gus.  Here is one of the responses:

I hate to be too pessimistic here, but I am unsure as whether we can chalk this one up in the "Saban made their a-- quit" column.

No, we can't take credit for this one.  He didn't stick around long enough.  Had he lost again this fall they probably would have been calling for his head though.

Yeah, and as much as I hate him, he'd be a good coach there.  Hopefully they don't want him.  I think he'd take the job in a minute.  :tinfoil: :tinfoil:

Petrino response tonight:
Quote
"The simplest response I have is: I'm sorry. These two words seem very inadequate. But that is my heart," Petrino said in a statement released Tuesday night. "All I have been able to think about is the number of people I've let down by making selfish decisions. I've taken a lot of criticism in the past. Some deserved, some not deserved. This time, I have no one to blame but myself.

"I chose to engage in an improper relationship. I also made several poor decisions following the end of that relationship and in the aftermath of the accident. I accept full responsibility for what has happened."

Petrino said he hopes to return to coaching in the future, but for now is focusing on his family.

"I have hurt my wife Becky and our four children," Petrino said. " ... My sole focus at this point is trying to repair the damage I've done to my family. They did not ask for any of this and deserve better. I am committed to being a better husband, father and human being as a result of this and will work each and every day to prove that to my family, friends and others. "

Once again, an arrogant, full of himself individual has been humbled and brought to his knees by his own conceit. How can he possibly "explain" this to his 4 kids. This is one thing I have NEVER had to worry about. He sounds sincere and I hope he will change for the best.

I agree.  There is no way Petrino could have recovered from this.  It was only a matter of time.  They did the smart thing by cutting their losses and moving on to search for the next guy.

20,000$...??  for an abor...well, what else comes to mind?

And this gal was engaged to another coach? He must be the world's biggest DA not to know his squeeze was being..shall we say, "hogged" by ol' Bobby.

I say good riddance and I actually hope they get a good coach and their team is able to be competitive...the strength of your enemy makes you stronger.

"Oh no, I couldn't possibly.  You're married and I'm engaged!"

"How about for $20,000 and a better job?"

"OK"

Some women have a price.  Sad but true.  Perhaps it is something they want to do anyway, but they want more incentive.  I knew a married woman who allegedly accepted a $100,000 bonus to have an affair with another man, who also was married.  They both ended up leaving their marriages.

I think he is only sorry that he got caught, and is trying to "say the right things" now in the hopes of a future career.

Probably someone will hire him eventually.  Auburn does come to mind.  Chizik can't do anything without Malzahn and Cam Newton.
