Title: SEC Basketball Coach Leaves for TCU?
Post by: Marshal Dillon on April 08, 2012, 11:22:37 PM
He must have been expecting to be fired so he left. TCU definitely has lower expectations.

 :o

Trent Johnson resigned Sunday as LSU's basketball coach, the announcement coming on the eve of his expected introduction as TCU's coach.

LSU athletic director Joe Alleva said Johnson is leaving the Tigers after four seasons to take another head coaching position.

Alleva didn't say where Johnson was headed, but TCU said Sunday that a "major announcement" involving its men's basketball program would be made during a news conference on the Fort Worth campus Monday afternoon.

I'm a little surprised. LSU had their best year since his hire and seemed to be headed upward as a team. LSU has had a hard time since Dale Brown left.

Where is Smitty?
He'd jump at this, screaming "Teaser title", like Scott Cochran jumps on weaklings.

Hard to say whether the leaving was voluntary, but probably it was.  Trent Johnson is a west coast guy, and for him living in the DFW area is probably a step up from Baton Rouge.  Plus, TCU has been working hard and spending money (which it has) to finally get its shot in the Big12 next year, so I doubt he had a pay cut.  Trent Johnson is a decent coach but not a great recruiter, and LSU might not like seeing Bama move right past them, even in basketball, so they probably weren't 100% happy with him either.  You guys are right, though, expectations likely are not too high for TCU basketball.

I know LSU is not a basketball Mecca, but choosing to leave an SEC school to go coach TCU? I don't care what sport it is, something about that just doesn't add up to me. I can't imagine that TCU could pay more than the Who could.

This does not surprise me. His teams were very slowly improving but they still were a lower tier SEC team. His time in Baton Rouge was limited. He never seemed to fit in. He even dressed different. He was the only SEC coach to not wear a coat and tie. LSU is the winner in this move. They should be able to get a decent coach.
