Title: How would Matt Barkley do against SEC defenses? Post by: 2Stater on March 27, 2012, 08:00:27 PM http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/60163/blog-debate-barkley-in-the-sec
Quote It wasn't a banner year for quarterbacks in the SEC last season. And, yes, I realize that's an understatement. But it was a banner year for premier defensive players. That's why the first round of the NFL draft next month is going to look like an SEC who's who. As many as 10 SEC defensive players could go in the first round. That's why Barkley would be average at best. Title: Re: How would Matt Barkley do against SEC defenses? Post by: crtuneman on March 28, 2012, 08:16:18 AM It always makes me laugh when West Coasters talk about football as if they know what real football is. It's one thing to have a good game when you play an SEC defense one time a year. But if you play LSU one week, then the next week you play Bama, then you play Georgia, then Florida, and so on, that is a brutal schedule. It takes a toll on your mind and spirit and body. Now Barkley is an elite QB, and he would have success against SEC defenses. But he would not be throwing for 300+ yards every game or throwing 6 TDs per game like he does against Pac12 defenses. His YPG avg would most likely be 100 yds less per game and his TD per game avg would be 2 or 3 at the most. West Coasters can whine all they want about the SEC being in cahoots with the SEC, but it does not change the fact that when SEC teams play outside their conference, non-SEC offenses struggle to score points. In 2010 the boogers were statistically the 11th ranked D in the SEC, and they still crushed Oregon's high flying offense. Case closed, the verdict is in, and no more needs to be said.

I like the Oregon reference too. By far the best PAC(?) team the last few years is 0-2 against SEC. Where would that put them in the SEC standings? Personally I would love to see a Bama vs. USCw national championship game. Title: Re: How would Matt Barkley do against SEC defenses? Post by: Jamos on March 29, 2012, 06:05:28 PM I think he would make Bama a great QB, it's too bad that LK has him.
Title: Re: How would Matt Barkley do against SEC defenses? Post by: cbbama99 on March 29, 2012, 07:57:31 PM I don't think there is any doubt that Barkley is a great QB, and would still do well in the SEC. Like td57 said though, facing defenses like LSU, Bama, and Georgia every week is far different that facing Washington State, Arizona, and Oregon State.

Title: Re: How would Matt Barkley do against SEC defenses? Post by: Jamos on March 30, 2012, 08:44:02 AM I agree. If Barkley played for Bama, he would be a very good QB for us. If he played for Auburn, well I'm not so sure about the same results there. ;)

I was coming in here to post the same thing. No QB is any good if they are laying on their back when it is time to release the ball. Title: Re: How would Matt Barkley do against SEC defenses? Post by: pmull on March 30, 2012, 10:49:58 AM Who are his offensive linemen? That is the true key. I agree. Put him in the SEC without a running game and he will struggle against the better teams. In general I think he is a very good QB and would start on most SEC teams. Title: Re: How would Matt Barkley do against SEC defenses? Post by: ricky023 on March 30, 2012, 01:57:09 PM I think this is why more of the West Coast kids don't come to play in the SEC because there is to much competition for them. RTR!
