Title: Players who made an impression.. Post by: hscoach on February 18, 2012, 03:09:55 PM Many of us have watched college football for years. I was wondering which players, past and present, have made an impression on you in their career? I am really wondering about player other than Bama players. I don't mind if you list Bama players, but I was just wondering who from other teams impressed you. One young man I remember was Johnny Rogers.
Title: Re: Players who made an impression.. Post by: 2Stater on February 18, 2012, 03:27:20 PM Johnny Rogers was an immense talent for Nebraska. Others that stood out to me were Herschel Walker, Vinny Testaverde, Dan Marino, Doug Flute, Turner Gill, Earl Campbell and Charlie Ward. I hate CW went to the NBA. He was such a great athlete, I would have loved to see what he could have done in the NFL.

Title: Re: Players who made an impression.. Post by: Leewillie on February 18, 2012, 04:03:52 PM I saw Herschel Walker play in a high school all-star game. I thought he was the best running back I had ever seen. I still believe that.
Johnny Musso played with more heart than anyone I've ever seen. Lee Roy Jordan dominated his position more than anyone I ever saw play. Title: Re: Players who made an impression.. Post by: Marshal Dillon on February 18, 2012, 04:07:46 PM Tommy Frazier, QB Nebraska
Tony Dorsett, RB Pitt- Might be greatest runner I ever saw, college & pro combined Greg Pruitt, RB Oklahoma-The greatest wishbone RB of all time- He was small at 5'9" 175 but he ran something like a 9.3 100 yard dash. He played like 12 years with the Browns and had a great career. Earl Campbell, RB Texas-Do I have to say more? Archie Manning, QB Ole Miss Bennie Blades, Safety, Miami-What a beast, hit like a LB and the agility and grace of a WR Warren Sapp, DT, Miami-Another monster hitter Jake Scott, Safety, Georgia-He was special Freddie Gilbert, DE, Georgia-Great pass rusher & run stopper. Great player. Charles White, RB, USC-Great runner & Heiman winner Anthony Davis, RB USC-He scored 6 TD's against Notre Dame in one game I'm having a brain freeze right now. How could I forget Tommy Frazier, Tony Dorsett, and Archie Manning. Also, even though he ended up being a murderer, OJ Simpson. Title: Re: Players who made an impression.. Post by: pmull on February 18, 2012, 05:19:23 PM Everyone says Herschel Walker and I will too. He is the best college football running back I have ever seen.
Johnny Rogers was mentioned and I remember him well. He hurt us bad but the player who broke our back in that game was Rick Glover IMO. He was one of the best DL players I have ever seen. Condredge Hollaway - Tenn Peyton Manning - Tenn Darren McFadden - Ark Danny Wuerffel - FL Bert Jones - LSU If I had to pick only one Alabama player to make this list I would choose Shaun Alexander. In the pros, I was impressed. Some more names I thought of who impressed me in college were: Rocket Ishmael, WR & Punt/KO returner Notre Dame-This guy is the only guy I ever thought could go all the the way anytime he touched the ball. He had incredible blazing speed. Jaquez Green, WR Florida- He teamed with Ike Hilliard and made an unstoppable combo in the Spurrier offense. Peerless Price, WR Tennessee-What an incredible playmaker. Fantastic receiver and punt returner. He made the UT offense hum. Mike Kolen, LB Auburn - What a hitter at LB. Known as Captain Crunch, he was the real deal. he had a very good pro career, too. Leroy Selmon, DE Oklahoma-Incredible DE, the first big, quick, fast guy of his size I can remember. He was like 6'5" 275# which was huge in the early 1970's. He was as quick & agile as a cat. I'm still thinking. Title: Re: Players who made an impression.. I have to say:
Barry Sanders, Doug Flutie, Herschel Walker, Desmond Howard, Derrick Thomas, Eric Dickerson Title: Re: Players who made an impression.. Post by: Chechem on February 18, 2012, 08:38:27 PM Just to add a couple.
Back during the 60s and early 70s players couldn't play as freshmen. To me, the two who were most impressive for Alabama (in freshman games) were Johnny Musso and Richard Todd. Both dominated, and we couldn't wait to see them on the field with the varsity teams. They didn't disappoint. Title: Re: Players who made an impression.. Post by: hscoach on February 18, 2012, 11:23:07 PM A few years ago Bradie James got my attention at the LSU/Bama game. He was making tackles sideline to sideline. Also add Bo Jackson and Sam "the Bam" Cunningham.
Title: Re: Players who made an impression.. Post by: ricky023 on February 19, 2012, 03:56:30 PM One that i remember is Tommy Nobus. He covered the middle and that was no man land. He brought Texas wins they didn't desire but I was never to hot on Darrell Royal. RTR!

Post by: Chechem on February 19, 2012, 07:05:39 PM This play woke up the country about the talent of Herschel Walker. Seems to me that Herschel didn't play in the first few games, or at least the first half of that game. Once he was unleashed, everyone saw what he could do with that combination of power and speed. WOW.edit: found it. Quote He burst onto the scene as a freshman in 1980 and didn't even hit the field until the second half of his first game against Tennessee. The Bulldogs trailed 15-2 in that contest on the road and needed a jolt. http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/27408/herschel-walker-was-one-of-a-kindWalker gave them a jolt all right. He ran over Bill Bates on his way to an epic 16-yard touchdown run, spawning a legendary career that produced 5,259 rushing yards -- an NCAA record for three seasons.
