Title: Gaudy WVU Win Proves What?
Post by: ALTideUp on January 05, 2012, 08:05:26 AM
Well it had to happen sooner or later - the 100 pt bowl game. This time it was WVU who felt their halftime cushion of 26 points was too precarious for them to let off the gas in the second half. The came out throwing and got the lead up to a more comfortable 40 points or thereabouts.

So what does this prove? I could see if they were intending to stay in the big east that they'd want to send a message that the league is legit and shouldn't lose its AG status. But they are leaving the BE. So why beat a team by 40? In an earlier post I joked about them trying for a 100 pts so they could argue for a share of the nat'l championship. Maybe that's no joke. In any event, if I were Dabo and the Clemson nation, I'd be furious.

I guess what it proves is that they are well suited to their new conference, in which football teams score more than basketball teams.

WVU put up 21 points on LSU.  The only other team to do that was Oregon, with 27, although some of those points were late, and meaningless.  All this says to me is that WVU has a great offense, and maybe Bama should look at what they are doing.

I don't have a problem with WVU "running up the score."  You cannot let off the gas until the game is well in hand and late in the 4th Quarter.

And while I like Dabo, I dislike Clemson.  They are too much like Auburn, with a shared history, color scheme and team name.  They whine too much for a football program; whined when Bama clobbered them a few years back.  Virginia Tech didn't whine, they took their loss like men.

And LSU still beat them pretty easily at home.

It proves that all offense teams like this and OSU that can score a million points against lesser foes can't really compete when they play a solid SEC defense.  Their offensive prowess is an illusion created by playing against other teams who only focus on offense and don't care how many points they give up as long as they can end up on top by the time the clock runs down.  It is a very volatile strategy.  One offensive miscue can get you in a hole you can't dig yourself out of, like when you fumble the ball on the 1 yard line going in for the lead and the other team runs it back 99 yards.  That is a 14 point swing in 1 play.  This volatility explains why every year, almost without fail, these teams will lose 1 or 2 games that they should have won easily.

C'mon man! Running up the score is adding an extra TD or 2. Hanging 70 is more like clubbing baby seals when you don't actually need the pelts.

I remember a Florida State game that was a tale of two halves.  28 to 0 at half, and the other team won the game.  Something similar happened to Bama last year.  All I am saying is that a team cannot let up on the gas too soon.

Well, given their defensive prowess I suppose you have a point.
