Title: HURT: Tide has to hit a moving target

This is about the NCAA Tournament selection process, but it isn't about any one school in particular.  I don't think the University of Alabama was the last team out of the field, if I had to guess. So it's not about that.

I don't think UAB was entirely 'exposed' by Tuesday night's demolition at the hands of Clemson, although the Blazers gave a bad account of themselves. Lamar blew a very good Alabama team out of the 1983 tournament in a first-round game. It can happen. So this is not about the Blazers, either. It's about hitting the moving target in the future.

That's what Anthony Grant has to do. The cool, calm Grant, who almost never displays any frustration in his comments to the press, called the NCAA selection process 'a bit of a moving target' when asked about it Sunday night. It is Grant's job - and, despite some far-fetched reports about other job opening, I think it will be Grant's job for some time to come - to get Alabama into the NCAA Tournament. He did a wonderful job of putting Alabama in that position on the court this season. At some point after Alabama's NIT run ends, Grant is going to have to sit down and see if he could have done anything differently off the court to help his team earn a spot in the 68-team field.

Thanks for posting, Coach #.

Part of me wants to continue, Texas-esque, griping and whining about this.  But it's time to move ahead and win the NIT.  Face it, the NCAA sucks.

Yes they do!

There needs to be consistency and transparency in any process like this. Gene Smith has not helped himself any in his interviews. I think Bilas was right when he said he didn't know if some of the committee members knew the ball was round. His non-explanations make him seem like he is trying to fabricate an answer.

It's amazing how much emphasis the NCAA placed on the SOS in basketball but it was the total opposite in football.  :pullhair:

I have thought the same thing many times the last couple of weeks.

The rules keep changing. This year it was SOS and RPI. Other years it is how strong you finish, specifically the last 10 games.

It would help if the NCAA would put knowledgeable basketball people on the selection committee. This years committee was a joke.

Yes, I thought the way you finished the season would play a much bigger role, which is why I was so sure Alabama would be in.  The way you played in February is a much better indicator of how you would play in the tourney instead of how you played in November.

It will alaways be a struggle with the sections committee due to the bias of the folks that make up the committee. You can bet that anytime the SEC has 6-7 teams selected, there is someone from the SEC on the committee same goes for the Big East, Pac 10, Big Ten, etc.

I would simply be satisfied with committee members that have actual "hands on" basketball experience.

Well we had a 20 win season that is good. CAG will bring us back into the fold in BB and his recruits are going to be building this program. RTR!   #+

I agree it is time to move on, and I am still angry about not making the Dance. However, this situation is not without recent precedent. I wish that I could remember the year, but it was during CMG's tenure that we had a weak non-con schedule, played strong in the SEC and did not get a bid to the Dance. While I agree with CAG that the target does seem to move around, playing the strongest non-con schedule you can (and doing well with it) would seem to be the magic ticket each year.

Next year it won't moving because it will be trying to keep up with our BB team. RTR!

It was 2001. I was pissed then too.

I'm sure CAG will dress up Bama's schedule for next year compared to this year. He didn't have much choice with his schedule this year due to the uncertainty of what to expect from the returning players from last year, after losing two starters who transfered to other schools.

That is all water under the bridge now and Bama is playing in the NIT and I don't consider that a bad thing due to the national publicity that Bama has recieved for not being selected for the NCAA tournament. If Bama had been selected for that tournament and lost in their first game, the media would only have beaten them down as being from the lowly SEC West and probably shouldn't have been there.

Now if Bama can win their way to Madison Square Garden in the NIT, things will be different for Bama next year with the media. This is what I think CAG will use to build his program on. He will get some love from the national media next year, something that he deserved this year but got very little of, but is needed to get on the same level as Kentucky and Florida in the SEC.

I'm looking forward to it, RTR.

I agree Jamos. I do think we are getting good publicity and it will do us well next year. The problem is we have a moving target and we(Alabama) can not focus on the moving NCAA, we just have to win each and every game. If we win our way into the tourney they can't even bend over backwards and keep us out. Next year will be one of our best teams since the CWS era I think. I so look forward to next year in BB. RTR!
