COLUMBIA, S.C. (October 11, 2011) – University of South Carolina senior quarterback Stephen Garcia has been dismissed from the football team, it was announced today.

“Being a student-athlete at the University of South Carolina is a privilege, not a right,” said Athletics Director Eric Hyman, “and we remind all of our student-athletes that there are consequences for their actions. For Stephen to return to and remain with the football squad this fall, we agreed on several established guidelines. Unfortunately, he has not been able to abide by those guidelines and has therefore forfeited his position on the roster. We wish him the best of luck as he moves forward in life.”

Well, that explains his performance against Auburn. I hate to see this, a young person who is apparently an alcoholic. Such a waste and a shame.

PF threw Spurrier under the bus today, saying "Spurrier is dismissing the writer as a diversion.  Said Spurrier can't take the heat for his mistakes with Garcia."

That coming from a guy who actually LIKES Spurrier.

I'm sure the University did offer Garcia professional help and probably got him some, but I don't care how much is offered or given to some one in that kind of need, if they don't want to help themselves no one else can help them.

Bingo. I just hope that getting kicked off the team will be a wake up call for this young man to hopefully get the help he obviously needs. Otherwise, I have a bad feeling we are going to be seeing a tragic end to his story.

So this happened last week, huh?  Did anybody else notice that he was not dismissed from the team until after they saw how Shaw would do as the starter.  I bet you an E-Cred that if Shaw had stunk up the place Garcia would still be on the team.  The only reason he wasn't dismissed after the 1st or 2nd offense was because they didn't have anybody else remotely ready to step in.

I don't think you can blame Spurrier without knowing the whole story.  Clearly the kid has a drinking problem.  Can't blame Spurrier for that.  Kicking him off the team earlier likely would not have caused him to stop drinking, it probably would have made it worse.  Perhaps Spurrier should have kicked him off the team sooner, but that's gotta be a tough call for any coach.  Likely he hated to see this kid waste his life.  Maybe he thought putting Garcia on a short leash would encourage him to clean up his act, and maybe it did for a short time.   But this is a problem of Garcia's own making, and Garcia has to take fully responsibility for his acts.

Yeah... MY support system.  It was a freakin joke.  If he isn't doing the right thing then it was time for him to go.  I pray for him and wish him well, but in the end you have to do what you're supposed to do.  I really don't f#$%@#g like you, BamaWV.  You are the worst poster on this forum. Y'all don't always have to be so negative about other programs... I come here because I enjoy the people and usually receive the same respect that I give.  I may make a sarcastic statement, occasionally but am very respectful of y'alls program.  Not saying  I want your website to be "SC" friendly, just know when to shut up and not be so judgemental.

If you make a "freakin joke" you ought to be able to recognize a "freakin joke".

I was not making any joke. Red flags waving everywhere that this young man was/is headed for serious trouble due to alcoholism. Even a complete idiot could read the signs and realize that treating it as a joke isn't helping, but worsening an already serious situation. I'll bet the USCe message boards are full off Garcia drinking jokes this very minute. His own father dismissing it as just another college boy acting up.   

Nah,.... you're wrong. 100% of the "real" Gamecock posters are very supportive of Garcia and what he's going through.  His Dad's comments were very respectful and intelligent.  Just shut the f#&k up about it.  If there is an ignore feature on here, just ignore me and give me the instructions on how to ignore you.  Don't like your posts and probably never will. 

I would suggest a 90 day treatment program, at least 28 days.  Then an opportunity to redeem himself (if he has eligibility).

Don't blame the alcoholic, blame the disease, very difficult to even consider recovery at that age.
