Title: Alabama Injuries Update After Ole Miss Game & Saban and Running the Ball More
Post by: Marshal Dillon on September 29, 2019, 02:09:50 PM
From Nick Saban:

Quote
Wide receiver Henry Ruggs III and defensive back Shyheim Carter, a pair of veteran starters, both exited the game but were able to return to the field after visits to the sideline medical tent.

Although Ruggs rejoined the offense and even covered kickoffs, the coaches elected to sit him because the junior was dealing with a “hip pointer” injury, Nick Saban revealed after the game.

Something I hope my fellow posters will address:

Quote
Alabama’s defense is still without Moses and fellow linebacker Joshua McMillon (knee) and defensive lineman LaBryan Ray (foot). Another game of 80-plus plays (88) led the coach to share his concerns over what kind of ramifications that can have on his team if that continues.

“If we play 20 more plays of defense every game that we play, the cumulative effect of that is times 12, so that’s a lot of plays and that’s a lot of wear and tear on some players,”
Saban said. “We’ve already lost some players, and hopefully we’ll get a few of those guys back maybe sometime later on.

Should we throw less and try to run more, like 40 times a game? I know we can’t keep having other teams running 80-90 plays a game on our defense.

For several years under Saban Bama was RBU.  They produced some of the nations runningbacks and they were on display all season long.  We now have incredible QB's and WR's to go along with those RBs but they tend to get most of the touches.  Maybe it is just easier to establish the pass than the run?  Maybe HSCoach can speak on that.  Anyways, I wish we would really put a lot of effort into dominating on the LOS by running a bit more.  I am afraid that eventually we may come against a team with the DBs that can run with our WRs.  I hope I'm wrong on that...

We are going to come up against teams with better DB who at least can tackle.  That will limit Bama's YAC. That will in turn mean we take more plays to score which will take time off the clock.  I just hope we can still score.

I'm sure CNS knows we need to call more running plays.  But with our OL, that's not a high probability for success.  Somehow the O needs to increase time-of-possession and still score.

The D could help some by getting off the field on 3rd down.

(All of the above is stating the obvious!!)

To run the football isn't a question of RBs only, but also the right OL.  Usually college OL are good at either pass or run blocking, but rarely both.  With changes in the rules (Targeting, blockers 3 yards downfield on pass plays, etc.) the momentum has shifted from defense to offense.  Plus, Bama has a once-in-a-decade QB for a given school, and perhaps the best WR group in history.   Bama is playing to its strengths, using every available competitive advantage to win the game.

Well we have Brown back on the O-line but takes time for him to gel with the others so our line is better. Maybe by time for lsu we can be ready to play cause they are gonna be a tough game. RTR!
