Title: "Alabama doesn’t need to run the ball anymore" Post by: Chechem on September 15, 2019, 09:35:41 AM https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/2019/09/alabama-doesnt-need-to-run-the-ball-anymore.html
And who needs a traditional running game when Harris has the ability to run a pattern out of the backfield on that fourth-and-two play, and take it to the end zone for a breathtaking 42-yard score? Harris had five receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns, becoming the first Alabama running back in the last 20 years with multiple touchdown receptions in a game (ESPN stats). Who needs a traditional running game when the quarterback throws footballs like darts, and has one of the greatest receiving corps in SEC history? Alabama receiver Jerry Jeudy, the reigning Biletnikoff winner, didn’t have his second reception until the third quarter yet Alabama had 286 yards passing in the first half. Jeudy finished third in receiving yards (68) behind DeVonta Smith (8-136 and two touchdowns) and Henry Ruggs III (6-122 and a touchdown). Tua’s five passing touchdowns tied his total from last season’s stunning Iron Bowl. How do you stop his slant patterns? SEC teams will be trying to figure that out all season. Tua’s 444 passing yards against South Carolina now ranks third all-time in Alabama history. In the end, it was arguably the greatest game by a quarterback in the history of Alabama football. Before Saturday, no Alabama quarterback had ever passed for more than 400 yards while throwing five touchdowns. I miss those 4th-quarter power runs against an exhausted team. But I love to watch Tua pick apart a tired defense too. :worship: :worship: Title: Re: "Alabama doesn’t need to run the ball anymore" Post by: McBaman on September 15, 2019, 10:02:06 AM Potential rat poison. There will always be times when you need to run the ball. Especially in short yardage situations late in tight games, or with adverse field conditions. Think of a wet ball on a rainy day.
OL did a decent (but not perfect) job of pass blocking, but they need to control the line of scrimmage on running plays too. Title: Re: "Alabama doesn’t need to run the ball anymore" Post by: pmull on September 15, 2019, 10:51:06 AM We were saying the same thing last year until the Clemson game. Good teams need balance. We need to develop a stronger running game. Third and two should not have to be a pass play. I am hoping Deonta Brown provides the same boost to the OL when he returns as he did last year when he was inserted as a starter.
Title: Re: "Alabama doesn’t need to run the ball anymore" Post by: ricky023 on September 15, 2019, 12:10:27 PM We need this running game to rest the defense. We need this running game to shorten the game some. There are a lot of reasons for running the football BUT, when you can't run it as we use to then you have to stop. Our O-line needs some playing time and to build some strength. RTR!

Here was a quarterback who led us to two NC's but wasn't good enough to hold his spot. I suppose we couldn't have alternated two quarterbacks during a game, although this would have confused opponents. I'm happy for his great success at Oklahoma but miss him on the Bama bench.
