Title: Jalen Hurts
Post by: bama57 on September 19, 2018, 04:05:02 PM
is it just me or doesn't Jalen appear to be playing a little better with a 28-point cushon when he comes in the game

He seems to be playing better I think from the fact that someone else is pushing harder than he has ever had. When he was in Channelview, he was the man and after the 2nd series at Alabama he became the man but now he ain't the man by himself. He has to earn it now. JMPO. RTR!

He's a junior.
Most of our past QBs couldn't have played as freshmen or sophomores, including Greg McElroy and AJ.  It's a lot of pressure, and it requires much experience.

But the difference is he lacks the arm strength and vision to excel (according to experts).  He's a quality QB, but we've got a better one now.

Just hope he decides to stay and learn.  He wants to be a coach.  Where else could he learn so much and so easily?  I'd like to see him wearing a headset next year, signaling in plays to Tua.

He is throwing the ball better. Hitting them in stride.  He also threw a touchdown pass the other day where he wouldn't have thrown the ball in the past because of coverage.  He is now on his 3rd or 4th offensive coordinator, if you count Sark.  This year he actually has a QB coach.  I have said in the past I think it is his high coached that didn't develop him properly.  I honestly think he was taught if the first option wasn't open get what you can with your legs.

I agree Jalen is playing better this year.  I don't think it is due to lack of pressure -- Jalen never seemed to feel that.  He has improved because Tua has pushed him, and because he has a QB coach.

It also could be because defenses are prepared for Tua, so they aren't stuffing the box and attacking Jalen's weaknesses as much.

I'd like to see him suited up playing 2nd string QB behind Tua next year myself.  He may not be the best qb we have but he is at least 2nd best.  Plus, he has one more year of eligibility after this year if I'm not mistaken...

It sure doesn't look like he is going to redshirt this year like reported. I wonder if he and CNS had a heart to heart about the matter and Jalen has agreed to be QB 1B?

I doubt CNS promised Jalen equal playing time.  More likely Jalen was told to 'make a decision about redshirting, and let's get past the drama'.  CNS was clearly tiring of the distraction.

More likely than my scenario. I'm just glad it's settled, however it played out.

Well Jalen has played in 3 games.  He can play in 4 games before a redshirt gets pulled.  So we should know in about 16 days.

What good would the redshirt do him if Tua comes back? RTR!

Give him another year that he could be the #1 QB for another team.

Most likely Jalen would redshirt to transfer.  But another possible is if Tua leaves for the NFL draft after his junior season.  A redshirt would give Jalen the opportunity to start one more year at Bama.

Hey CP do you think Jalen would hold on that long just to play another year? I am wondering because of his dad pushing him maybe. RTR!

You're probably right, with his dad pushing him.  But other sources think Jalen might be happy at Bama, even in a backup role, and not wanting to transfer.   :stars:

You know if Jalen would stay and the knowledge would consume and be ready to guide, I think we could probably have a 3-peat in line if this works out.  8)  RTR!

Here is what Saban had to say recently:

Quote
“We needed both quarterbacks last year, and we'll need them both again this year.”

During his Thursday radio show, where Low was the media guest, Saban discussed the NCAA’s new redshirt rule, which allows a player to play in up to four games and still maintain a redshirt year. With Hurts set to graduate this winter, he can transfer after the season and be immediately eligible to play for another school. And thanks to the new redshirt rule, if Hurts plays in only one more game this fall, the Houston native could have two more years to play in college.

Saban told Low he and Hurts had discussions at the beginning of the season regarding various scenarios for the quarterback’s future, but Hurts “has been nothing but team-oriented.”

“Every time I’ve talked to Jalen since the season started, he’s said, ‘Coach, I want to play,’ and has never said otherwise,” Saban said. “He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do. He’s never asked not to play in a game. He says he’s ready to play and has practiced well and prepared well. Jalen’s a competitor, and the kids on this team respect him. They respect both quarterbacks.

“And I think it says a lot about both kids that neither one of them has ever said a bad word about the other.”

This is nothing but coaches recruiting players of quality rather than 5* quantity. Most players want the limelight but players like Jalen are in the limelight of being a team member. Well done sir. RTR!

I don't remember where I heard/read it but, I think I saw that Jalen ultimately wants to be a coach.  If that is his ultimate goal then he can play as much as he is allowed/needed this year, graduate this winter then play next year too.  He would obviously be in grad school at that time and after the 2019 season he could/would be a graduate assistant coach.  IMO, he would be a very valuable asset in that position... He has impressed me throughout his tenure at Bama and I think he will be successful after his playing days with us are finished...

You know learning under CNS after playing for him, you can bet Jalen would be a good coach someday kind of like Kirby. RTR!

Best case scenario, and I think likely. Jalen is smart and knows the game pretty well. I'd very much like to see that.
