Title: Will We See Bama In a 4-3 Defense v Auburn?
Post by: Catch Prothro on November 15, 2017, 09:27:48 AM
With the depth issues Bama has at LB, I've been wondering if Bama might use more of a 4-3 scheme against Auburn.  It seemed that the 4th LB spot was a big weakness against MS State.

Given Auburn's offense, and the need for Bama to get its best 11 defensive players on the field, I think it might be beneficial for Bama to play 4-3 against Auburn.  That puts another DL in the trenches to help with run support, and eliminates that 4th "weakest link" LB.

I know Bama's base D is 3-4,  but with a variety of schemes to work with, does anyone think we might see more of a 4-3 defense moving forward?

I think it depends on if Miller and Lewis return, and if they get up to speed.

I think it is a good idea if we aren't going to have some guys back in time.  They can make the switch this week and get all of the kinks worked out against Mercer.

Was wondering the same thing several games ago.  I don't have the knowledge to discuss how easily a defense can make the transition.  Anybody know?

I don't.   :lol2:

I do know that 4-3 is used by Belichick against spread teams, and that Bama uses a different D as well in that situation, rarely relying upon base 3-4 (usually using a nickel or dime defense).  The nickel uses 3DL-3LB-5DB or 4-2-5, whereas the dime uses an extra DB from the nickel package (4-1-6 or 3-2-6).

And how much of a nickel vs Boogers depends on Minkah's hammy?

Boy, that was a weird sentence!   :lol2:

I'll put five dollars down that boogers will cover the nickel.

I expect a 4-2-5 look because of the spread and the ability to rush multiple players.

Thursday practice report:

"With Fitzpatrick sidelined, the team worked on its dime alignment with Hootie Jones at the Money position, Tony Brown at the Star and Deionte Thompson and Ronnie Harrison at the safety spots."

Me too.  He is like a really fast penguin out there trying to tackle.  God gave him two arms but does he ever wrap up?   >:(
