Title: Hurt: Thunder and lightning
Post by: pmull on September 25, 2011, 10:13:12 AM
What really had to hurt the Hogs, though, wasn't the thunder. It was the lightning.

To be trampled by elephants is one thing. To have elephants beat you to the punch with quickness is something else altogether. And to have those elephants fool you outright, well, that's adding insult to injury.

That's what happened in Alabama's 38-14 win over Arkansas. The Crimson Tide was dominant at its own game, controlling the line of scrimmage and stifling the run on defense, gradually suffocating another one-dimensional team the way a boa constrictor squeezes a piglet. But Alabama was able beat Arkansas at its own game as well.

Take special teams, for instance. All the pre-game talk, justifiably, was about Arkansas' explosive returners and clever trickery. Yet it was Alabama's Marquis Maze that took a Razorback punt at his own 13 and went on a Palmeresque journey to the end zone, weaving through the Arkansas coverage like an inebriated elf on ice skates and further intoxicating an already rowdy home crowd in the process. It was AJ McCarron, transformed in an instant from holder into quarterback on a well-conceived early fake, befuddling the Razorbacks - who were apparently too addled to even call a timeout and stop the impending disaster.

Yep, I was surprised they didn't call a timeout there.
