Title: Jalen Hurts
Post by: Crimson Phoenix on September 06, 2017, 10:51:56 AM
Somebody I respect said that Jalen Hurts has always been good, but in his opinion, Jalen has not improved much since the second game of his freshman year.

What do you think?  I thought that Jalen's performance was not great Saturday because much of the offensive line is new and he didn't get enough protection.  Also, aren't the players having to get used to a new system?

There is experience on the O line, but they definitely have some issues. Got to give a lot of credit to the FSU defense, too. Jalen was on the run a lot because of that, and with the exception of a few plays, receivers were covered up pretty well. Until we improve in those areas, he won't have a chance to show much improvement.

Thanks.  The FSU defense was definitely an important factor.  Looks like they will be carrying a heavy load this season without Francois.

I agree. I was looking forward to watching them beat Clemson, but I doubt that happens now. Tough injury for the kid.

I just saw in one of the al.com articles where FSU has 2 future first round DBs playing for them.  I knew about the safety, but apparently they have a 1st round corner as well.

I'm not convinced that FSU would beat Clemson even if Francois was healthy.  I have heard the Clemson QB referred to as Deshaun Watson v 2.0... Hopefully he will be good enough this Saturday to stomp a mud hole in Awbren and walk it dry...    :popcorn2:

I'm up here in the middle of Clemson territory. They are absolutely giddy over the way Kelly Bryant played against Whatsamatta U. They weren't expecting it. He apparently struggled in their scrimmages.

Well I have to say Jalen must be playing pretty good or Tua pretty bad because Jalen is still the starter. I thought after all the descriptions in the spring game and fall practice Tua was doing real good. So something has to be right somewhere. I am just not sure cause I don't see the games just Eli and company and they don't point out one player. RTR!

It's hard to judge on the basis of his first game under a new OC against an elite defense. And with Bama's defense controlling the game, there wasn't a need to take unnecessary risks.

I think we'll probably see an emphasis on the passing game the next two weeks against weaker opponents.

I look at the passes on target or where he missed.  He missed in the right place the other day.  I didn't see any underthrown balls or balls thrown behind the rec's like he did last year.

Three first downs in the 2nd half vs. FSU.  Some of that on Jalen, but not all.  Play design, play calling, and pitiful OL play.  We'll see if it gets any better this week.

Exactly. Was it the FSU defense or a bad offensive game plan/execution? Need to see 2 or 3 more games. The OL definitely struggled with pass blocking, a constant bugaboo.

http://www.al.com/alabamafootball/index.ssf/2017/09/nick_saban_wants_alabama_qb_ja.html

After reviewing film, Coach Saban wants Hurts to look for more receivers.  Calvin Ridley was targeted ten times while no other player was thrown the ball more than twice.

I think this Saturday will be interesting to watch how Hurts does with time to throw (assuming he does). If he has a great day passing, then that may bode well for his improvement from last year. If not, well...

Most football coaches will tell you that they see the most improvement between the first and second games.  If that holds true for our Tide then Jalen might be able to set up a BBQ grill in the backfield, grill some burgers and dogs, feed the WR's, RB's and possibly the OLmen before he decides on which WR to throw too...

Since Fresno State was 1-11 last year I would expect gigantic improvement by Alabama.

Hurts should have a big day today. First time in the last three games we have not faced a top 5 defense.

No one needs to get injured today!!!!

I think we had our season quota of injuries in one game.

I think he HAS improved. I think FSU was a strong team and we were kept a little "off" for parts of the game. The problem here is - We are Alabama and some people expect perfection from our student athletes. I don't think Jalem played "bad" last week - I think he will be fine. I have faith in our men and Coach. :)
Missed all of you this past year - it's been a rough one.

Glad to be back though
