Title: Situational defense, decoded: An inside look at Nick Saban's system

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- The ball changes hands, a series is about to start, and the flurry before the fury begins.

An opposing offense huddles on the far sideline, and on the field stand 15 members of Alabama's defense.

Quarterbacks might think they're playing against 15 defenders sometimes when they face a Nick Saban defense, but for now this is no mirage. There really are more than 11 Alabama players standing there with their eyes focused on their own sideline.

The offense breaks its huddle, and in the coaches' box upstairs, one word is communicated to the coaches on the sidelines.

"Red!"

Red? All of the offensive personnel groups are color-coded, Saban explained.

I hope Bama gets some sacks this week.

I worry more about the Bama O thand the D. Arkansas is a lot better on D than they have been.

Thanks general for posting. Great article.

Contrast Bama's defense with what the boogers have gone to this week. Defense for dummies.

Auburn's new simplified (dummied down) defensive approach designed for more aggressive, faster play.

Auburn's defense has had some humbling experiences this season, like allowing Clemson 624 yards last week and Mississippi State 531 yards the week before and Utah State 448 yards the week before that.

Chizik is not hiding from the fact Auburn is 117th in the nation in total defense, using words such as "deficiencies" during his weekly Tuesday press conference.

Hope it doesn't work. :popcorn2:

Good job, but we still know what those opposing QB's know is that only 11 of those 15 guys get to come out. They may be wondering which one are they. RTR!

Good article. I feel like I'm qualified to be a defensive coordinator after reading it. No wonder it confuses QB's.
