Title: Tony Barnhart: Bit by bit, college football is imploding before our eyes
Post by: pmull on September 21, 2011, 02:41:31 PM
So word comes late Tuesday night that after a song and dance that would have made Fred Astaire (ask you mother, or maybe your grandmother) proud, Larry Scott and the gang at the Pac-12 told Oklahoma and Texas: "Hey guys, we're good at 12. But thanks for your interest."

Is anybody else out there just sick of this? Has anybody out there had it up to here with the events of the past week? Minute by minute, tweet by tweet, we are seeing college athletics implode before our eyes.

A person who has worked in the business for all of his adult life summed it up for me yesterday and he gave his apologies to Winston Churchill in advance: "This has not been our finest hour."

can't wait to see how this all finally shakes out
a screwed up mess is my guess as a end results

last time this happened FSU went with the the ACC
stating Academics as the reason they picked  like they did
and in the next breath stated they must get the "U" in there too  ...

Bear Bryant wanted to fix this mess many years ago by getting away from the NCAA with a super conference for the major programs. This mess that we are seeing now can't correct itself until all of the smaller conferences (2nd tier schools) are separated back to where they once were or made to join the larger schools conferences. If the 2nd tier schools want to compete for National Championships, they need to be in a conference that will give them the type of competition, on a weekly basis, that the larger schools are now playing.

I'm for the super conferences even though it will change some things that we have gotten so used to over the years. I do worry though how bad the NCAA can screw all this up with more rules.

Quite the contrary, opportunity to fix some of the broken IMO.

At this I'd be fine with the SEC retracting the offer to A&M and sticking with 12.  I don't see any way that we can to 14 and keep the annual games with Auburn and Tennessee.  The conferences are acting their best financial interest but I think the fans are going to be the losers when it's all over with.
