Nick Saban: Alabama QB Jalen Hurts wasn't 'developed' as a passer in 2016
(http://media.al.com/alphotos/photo/2017/01/10/-6d18032c6a6c2dc6.JPG)Alabama coach Nick Saban said the coaching staff didn't develop Jalen Hurts as a passer in an effort to protect the then-freshman quarterback. He said this year the goal is to have Hurts throw the ball more efficiently and for the offense to become more pro style like it used to be.

"I think we protected him a bit last year," Saban said Thursday on WJOX (94.5 FM). "It didn't enhance his development and sometimes later in the year when people played us in a way where we needed to be able to throw the ball, we may not have been efficient as we would have liked to have been. That's probably our fault as coaches because we protected him, instead of developed him as a young player."

"Last year with Jalen, because he was a freshman and because of his athleticism, we became almost more of a quarterback-run, spread team and that's not really what we want to be," Saban said Thursday. "We want to be more pro style as we were, with a mix of a spread. We want a dual-threat quarterback who can make plays with his feet but maybe not necessarily have a bunch of quarterback runs to enhance the offense.

I hope we get to see this balance in the A Day game. Daboll may be just the guy we've been looking for. Time will tell.

It felt to me like Kiffin had one foot out the door last season. After LSU figured out how to shut down Bama's running game and force Hurts to throw, he made no adjustments. It was obvious Hurts was struggling with passing the ball, but it looked like Kiffin just stuck with the same plan.

Hard to develop a freshman QB during the season, especially when he wasn't planned to be the starter at the beginning of the season.  I think we see improved passing from him this year.

Saban has mentioned, and i heard it in some players interviews, that they want to get back to dominating teams. Making them quit. How do you do that? Power football, with play action thrown in for good measure. But to do that the O-line had to be a bunch of whoop arse type. Do we have that? I guess we will see.

A lot of experimenting going on with the O line, so I doubt we're there yet. Still got time to get them dialed in before the season starts.
