My dad told me years ago Alabama had a live elephant mascot. First picture I have ever seen of it.

The 1947 Alabama Homecoming Queen Sue Donegan parades before a sell out crowd of 25,000 at Denny Stadium atop the Crimson Tide's live elephant mascot. The football team was in the first year of Harold "Red" Drew's coaching tenure and faced a daunting LSU squad for the Nov. 22 contest.

This has been discussed a lot previously (on TS), and I've forgotten details, but as I recall it was never an official mascot.  The elephant was on loan from a traveling circus or some such.

Correct me if I'm wrong.  Lady Friend does it daily. (http://forum.audacityteam.org/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

That's probably correct. Dad graduated UA in 1950. I just remember when I was young he told me about an elephant mascot. Only elephants I saw when I was young were on TV, the old Tarzan movies with Johnny Weissmiller sp? Too bad I can't ask him now.

You're right. Ringling Bros. came to Bham the same time we played Auburn, and I saw the borrowed elephants (dyed red) during two of the games. Very brief appearances. I didn't know one showed up at Denny. Good new information from Coach Hank.
