Title: FINAL: No. 3 Alabama defeats No. 23 Penn State 27-11
Post by: pmull on September 10, 2011, 06:10:10 PM
STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania -- Penn State gave Alabama its hardest punch early.

Even an opening drive fueled by 107,846 fans in Beaver Stadium that lasted 16 plays and half the first quarter could only muster three points.

In the end, Alabama's defense once again proved stellar and was joined by an offense that found its groove - and arguably its starting quarterback in sophomore AJ McCarron.

The Crimson Tide defeated Penn State 27-11 led by McCarron's strong play. He completed 19-of-31 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown.

Trent Richardson ran for 111 yards on 26 carries and scored twice.

Thanks for the article. Trent rushed 26 ties for 111 yards which is 4.3 yards a carry. We have to do better up front.

Pass blocking is ok, but the SEC play is gonna be tougher. The Running game has got to improve big time or LSU, Arkie, Tenn. Auburn will give us fits. Our defense is great all around. We do however have to get tougher for SEC play, the afore mentioned teams are going to be a offense to deal with in play.
Our kicking game is pitiful. Cade use to in high School kick it out of the endzone starting at the 40 or 45 yd. line is not good. We sure need more than Cody type punt when we play the big guys. I am afriad if we played a Boise St. today we would have had problems. Gosh, I love my team but what I just described scares me the rest of the year. Please, remember last year and when we lost our first game we looked mediocre. I north Texas will tell us a lot more of what we need to know. BAMA wins, BAMA wins! RTR!

Guys, there is not much of a credible threat in the passing game right now.  When we get our full stable of receivers back and AJ gets settled in, the running game will open up some.  Both teams we have played where gambling and selling out to stop the run.

The Tide went on the road and humiliated a Top 25 program. 107,000 fans saw PSU get their hats handed to them and, again this year, go home thanking the football gods it wasn't worse. RTR

It doesn't matter what league your in, running the ball with 8-9 in the box is tough. We really need to get the downfield passing game going.

You're right about that, 19 completions for 163 yards is not good. I don't think you can blame the receivers, Saban insists on throwing those 2 yard passes and play it safe.

The short passes are not a bad game plan considering the inexperience at QB and the 108,000 in the crowd.

They're a Top 25 program because they have such a cream puff schedule this year. Their next tough game is November 12th against Nebraska. Then, they play a wounded Ohio State, then Wisconsin. What a joke of a schedule.

We are not going to go into another game with as tough as conditions as this. 107,000 fans is tough. Penn State is a good team. We beat them easily. This was a good win. I like this team and I love this defense.

I second the nomination.  All in favor?

A steak would be pretty good about right now.

I'd like to chime in for those worry warts that Saban seems to trying to show only a vanilla offense while breaking in a first year starter at QB. As he develops more faith in AJ, I suspect the offense to open up more.

Welcome, doc.

I'll take a win on the road at Happy Valley ANY time.  I think we'd have had a similar game plan with GMac at QB.

We might not score 50+ a game with that game plan, but we have won many NCs with that exact game plan and a strong D.

I agree.  A new QB starting a road game before 107K fans, no reason to take chances if the D is good.  I almost expected a Les Miles style, low scoring defensive struggle with Bama winning by wearing down the other team.  However, Saban gave AJ some latitude, enough to allow his development, which portends well for that future, epic struggle circled on the November calendar.  From what I have see so far, those will be the two best teams in the country, and it appears that the respective coaching staffs also see that as well and are working towards that end, while at the same time allowing for the reality and requirement that you win (and improve) each week.
