Title: Braves fire Fredi Gonzalez amid one of the worst starts in MLB history
Post by: Jamos on May 17, 2016, 06:38:31 PM
The Atlanta Braves were one of the best teams in Major League Baseball in Fredi Gonzalez’s first three seasons as their manager. They won 279 games from 2011 to 2013, trailing the Texas Rangers by one win for most in baseball.

Let's see if I can figure this one out. The Braves trade all but one of their better players off keeping Freddie Freeman. This was to save money and invest in their farm system. It was a given they were not given a chance to win many games this year with the players they acquired in all the trades but they would save money which would be invested for future teams.

The Braves played up to exactly what most folks expected, terrible. With the worst record in baseball, the Braves management now decides that they should be better so they fired the manager Gonzalez. During their pregame broadcast tonight, the Braves broadcast team said that the management said it wasn't Gonzalez's fault for all this but yet they fired him.  ???

This has to be one of the most bizarre team reorganizations I have ever seen in professional sports. They get rid of basically their whole starting team, replace them with a bunch of nobody"s and now fire the coach for not winning.

I can still remember the time when we bought tickets to go to Fulton County Stadium to watch Chief Knochoma and the other team. It would be whoever the other team was as to when we went to watch a game. RTR!

Yeah, when Paco was scheduled to pitch, you never knew if he'd show up. He never did figure out that Atlanta traffic.  :lol2:

Gosh this one post sure brings back some great times and memories. We went to the game not worrying about who would win but just who we would get to see play from the other team. , We knew who would win before we purchased the tickets. RTR!

Pascaul was one of a kind.

Quote
In his first season with the Atlanta Braves in 1982, Perez missed a start because he spent two hours driving on the freeway around Fulton County Stadium looking for an exit ramp. Perez had already pitched in two home games with the team so clearly he had found his way to his home ballpark previously. "There's a big radio and the merengue music was real loud." he told Sports Illustrated in a 1990 feature on Perez and his four baseball playing siblings. "I forgot my wallet, so I have no money and no license. I pass around the city two times easy, but the car so hot I stop at a gas station. I ask for $10 worth, and the guy say, 'You Pascual Perez? People been waiting for you at the stadium." I'm 20 minutes away, he tell me. I feel like a heart attack. I think I get fired, maybe. Boss Torre say he fine me $100. I say, 'What you say, $100?' He smile, say, 'Ciento pesos' I smile. Ciento pesos worth only 10 bucks."

Quote
As this MLB.com video details, this series of three in-game fights still remains a contender for the craziest brawl in baseball history. It all began when Perez drilled Padres leadoff hitter Alan Wiggins with the first pitch of the August 12 game and escalated as the Padres threw at Perez all four times he came to bat during the game. At one point Perez picks up a bat and wields it at the Padres catcher. Nineteen players and coaches were ejected and several fans were arrested by the time the game was over.

Quote
Described in the Sports Illustrated feature as prowling "the mound like a restless hyena," Perez developed a unique method for keeping baserunners close to the bag. Taking advantage of his lanky frame, Perez would check runners by bending over and peeking through his legs, often throwing the ball between them with his pickoff throw. Perez also developed his own version of the Eephus pitch, a slow, extremely high-arching changeup that was renamed "the Pascual pitch" when he threw it.

Don't forget "stars" like Rick Camp, Rick Mahler, Biff Pocoroba, Zane Smith, Claudel Washington, Bruce Benedict & many other greats of the game. The true stars during the dark times were Skip Caray & Ernie Johnson who kept us entertained while watching the ineptness of the Braves.
