Title: Tide's Jesse Williams is no novelty act
Post by: pmull on September 07, 2011, 07:49:17 AM
The Williams family landed in full force over the weekend for the Crimson Tide's season opener against Kent State.

"There are 16 of them," Williams said Tuesday. "Grandparents, parents, friends, aunties. If you hear a lot of crazy accents in Tuscaloosa this week, that's them."

Williams admitted there was a bit of culture shock, primarily because of the magnitude of football in this community.

Despite the welcome distraction of family, Williams showed in the first game that he is no novelty act for Alabama this season. His unorthodox route to Tuscaloosa didn't stop him from landing in the starting lineup, and it appears he will be a major cog in what may be the nation's best defense this season. And there is better news for Alabama fans - Williams says he is still getting better.

Good article pmull, thanks for posting. Have an e-cred.

I bought some new binoculars this year for the games. Couldn't find my old pair of Zeiss binoculars - I think my son and I left them insidethe Cahaba Wildlife management area 2 years ago. Anyway, Jesse is easy to pick out. All those tatoos on arms and legs. He is a beast. He plays special teams also, lines up at left guard in the blocking formation for PATs and field goals.

He is easy to spot on TV too.

we are very fortunate our Coaching staff recognized his talents

I look for great things from him this year on D
having that many family members show up with that long of a commute is awesome

Defensive lineman are often unsung heroes in the 3-4.  On top of that, it appears that the statistician fell asleep on a few plays Jesse made early in the game.  But anyone who watched the game closely can see that Jesse made a great impact on several plays.  So, so proud to have him.  He will be the first to admit he's still learning a lot about the game, and will be a great one for us soon.

All I know is that I saw the guy(s) lined up in front of him going backwards a whole lot.

That is great!  Good for you guys.  You should make plans to come watch the national championship game in New Orleans in January.  I have a feeling we are going to be playing in that game.
