Title: Baseball Set to Host Eighth-Ranked Ole Miss this Weekend
Post by: Jamos on April 14, 2016, 06:30:54 PM
The Crimson Tide welcomes eighth-ranked Ole Miss to Sewell-Thomas Stadium for a three-game weekend series this Friday through Sunday. The Crimson Tide and Rebels are scheduled for a 7 p.m. CT start in the series opener on Friday. Saturday's game is set to start at 5 p.m. CT to accommodate for football's A-Day Game, while Sunday's finale is slated for a 1 p.m. CT first pitch. All three games will air live on SECN+ with Mick Gillispie and Lance Cormier calling all the action.

Could be a low-scoring game.
BTW, the Ole Miss relief pitcher, Andy Pagnozzi, was arrested for DUI last week.  But doesn't look like he'll miss any games.

Kenny Stabler wasn't someone you would have wanted to throw out the first ball.
He'd burn the catcher with a fastball.
He was drafted by the Yankees in 1966; fortunately played NFL instead!!

HoF pitcher and 300 game winner Don Sutton only lost one high school game.  The opposing pitcher was Kenny Stabler.

Ole Miss took Game One 4-0.

We went into 9th behind 1-0 on one unearned run before giving up 3 more runs. Bramblett pitched good enough to win but the offense never got going. A combined 9 hits with Ole Miss getting 5 and Bama 4. Ole Miss got their runners home while we left ours on.

Game Two at 5:00 today.

Yep, we squandered a great chance when we had the bases loaded with only one out, and failed to get anyone across.

Bama evens the series winning Game Two 2-0. A good start for Jake Walters who went 7 scoreless innings for the win. Burrows pitched the final 2 innings for the save.

Bama wins the rubber match 7-2. Must have been a totally different team yesterday and today, than what played Friday night. Jekyll and Hyde team for sure.

We were playing the # 8 team in the NCAA. On Friday night we went into the 9th behind 1-0 and that run was unearned. Ole Miss got their runners home we could not. The situation was reversed in Games 2 & 3. Pitching for both teams was terrific this weekend. Taking 2 of 3 was a very good weekend for the Tide.

At the mid way point of the SEC schedule we are 8-7 and in the top half of the league. We were 4-2 at home and 4-5 on the road.

For the most part, Bama was inept at the plate Friday night. Made to look like fools. I know that they have more in them than that, and they showed it yesterday and today. I'm very glad they rebounded.

Friday night pitching for both teams made hitters look bad. There was a total of 9 hits with Ole Miss getting 5 and Bama 4. Ole Miss struck out 9 Bama hitters while Bama struck out 8. Bramlette for Ole Miss and Bramblette for Alabama are two of the better pitchers in the league and will be high MLB draft picks this year.

Neither team played especially well on Friday.  Both pitchers did well for 5 innings, then both tired.  But neither team had much hitting, and there were fielding errors.  I don't think either one is very good.

Didn't see the last 2 games, but nice to see Alabama win them and take the series.  Maybe they'll get hot during the last few weeks.   :dunno:

Too soon to know.  Baseball players with talent, especially pitchers, often 'take the money' and jump to the majors.

Big question: Will the same coach be back?   :tinfoil: :tinfoil: :tinfoil:

We will lose some of our best pitchers to the MLB draft. Our Friday night starter, Geoffery Bramblette, is a junior and having another good year. He will be a lower round draft pick. Our closer, Thomas Burrows, is also a junior and he will be a very low round draft pick. He is one of the best closers in the college game. Our Sunday starter, Nick Eicholtz, is a junior but he could come back. He missed his sophomore season with elbow surgery. He should get drafted but may elect to come back. One of of best pitchers is Saturday starter Jake Walters, he is a sophomore and will return.

Our third baseman, Chance Vincent, is a senior. The only junior that may leave is Will Haynie. He is a very good catcher but needs to improve his hitting. He hits for power but is a low .200 hitter. He could be back.

Our talent level is improving. It is debatable if CMG is getting as much out of this line up as he can. We are a middle of the pack SEC team. At this time we are projected as a 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Without a strong finish to this season we could see a coaching change.

If that coaching change should come how many coaches out there is capable of doing better? The reason I ask this is because I never hear of other coaches who singled out as good enough to improve a team like ours. Some of you closer to the game there may know of names that might be an interest to our staff. RTR!

Alabama has a $42 Million stadium and a $2 coach.  HTH

CMG is a good coach but not an elite coach that can get up to the top 1/3 of the SEC and compete for championships. Like football and other NCAA sports the SEC is the most difficult conference to compete at the highest level. I am not sure who is available that would be an upgrade. We will not know until we offer up a huge contract to someone and see what they say.

IMO CMG biggest weakness is his staff. Pitching coach Dax Norris and hitting coach Andy Phillips were very good players for us but I do not think they are at the level required for a top NCAA program.
