Title: "Tide comes out okay in dress rehearsal"

Pencils down. The first test is over.  How’d you do?

Not terrible, if you’re speaking for the Alabama football team after Saturday’s dress rehearsal for the real thing. Any win with a score like 48-7 must receive a passing grade.

But facing Kent State was more of an open-book exam the week before a comprehensive final. Forget Joe Paterno’s age and the fact this isn’t the Penn State of the 1980s. Rural western Pennsylvania is never an easy place for outsiders to visit.

So forget celebrating a restful holiday. There’s plenty of heavy labor for the second-ranked Crimson Tide’s Monday as game-plan installation commences.

Where were the red Xs on Saturday’s assessment?

Yes they did, a lot of players had a chance to be graded to see if and how much they can help the team this season. I saw a lot more positives that I did negatives. The depth chart only improves when everybody gets to play.

Plus it helps recruiting.  How many times did we hear "Bama is loaded" in negative recruiting this year?

Top-level players can play as freshmen at Alabama.  Hope Dorial Green-Beckham is paying close attention.  :coffee1:

Exactly, that's why I stayed to the end of the game just to see how much talent had been standing on the sidelines. We struggled so much on kick covereage last year and I'm sure the coaches sre trying to shore up that area with the young ones that are wanting some playing time. Yes we need Green-Beckham and I think he needs Bama to take him to that high dollar level in his career.

I like that thinking.  Hope he is thinking about his future, not the "Mom can drive to see me play" angle.

Glad you mentioned the kick coverage.  No Trent Richardson on coverage?  That coverage was a major problem early last year, but by the end it was a strength.

I just cringe when I see the players like Richardson on the kick teams, I prefer the young non-starters, great game experience for them.

Oh yeah.  Those young guys feel like a part of the team if they play, even for just a series or a kickoff.  It helps practice the next week.

Not playing sucks.  I remember walking out of the locker room after a win.  I hadn't played.  The crowd cheered every player that came out behind me; not me much.   :'( :-[

I'm sorry, that would hurt.  :(

It's hard to make fans understand what an important role the non-starters play in the success of a team, these players don't get enough credit.

I had plenty of celebration later.  I always try to remember those days when coaching young kids, including everyone as best I can.  Kids don't forget their highs and lows when they're young.
