TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - There was a steep price to pay at Clemson for defensive linemen who didn't log the expected hours in study hall. Steep, as in the tall dike that held the vast waters of Hartwell Lake from the football practice fields.

"It was almost a 90-degree angle, and he made us run up it at 5 o'clock in the morning," Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie Da'Quan Bowers said.

He is Chris Rumph, now Alabama's new, intense and colorful defensive line coach. He keeps his linemen in line.

"He always had the funkiest punishments ever," Bowers said. "The one he used to dish out for missing class was never pretty. We had this drill called the scalded dog where we had to get on one leg and crawl across the field and come back on one leg, which is tough. With pads on. After practice, so your legs are burning."
