Title: Texas A&M Notifies Big XII of Departure
Post by: pmull on August 31, 2011, 02:43:44 PM
Texas A&M University today officially notified the Big 12 Conference that the institution will submit an application to join another athletic conference. Should this application be accepted, Texas A&M will end its membership in the Big 12 Conference effective June 30, 2012.

"After much thought and consideration, and pursuant to the action of the (Texas A&M University System) Board of Regents authorizing me to take action related to Texas A&M University's athletic conference alignment, I have determined it is in the best interest of Texas A&M to make application to join another athletic conference," President R. Bowen Loftin wrote to Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe in the letter dated August 31, 2011.

"We appreciate the Big 12's willingness to engage in a dialogue to end our relationship through a mutually agreeable settlement," Loftin added. "We, too, desire that this process be as amicable and prompt as possible and result in a resolution of all outstanding issues, including mutual waivers by Texas A&M and the conference on behalf of all the remaining members."

Now we'll have to learn how to cook chicken-fried steak.

At least their band is SEC-worthy:

I think this is the beginning of something very big for the NCAA, the ball is rolling now.  ;)

It looks like the SEC made the politically correct statement to the media that the SEC is not expanding at this time. Meanwhile, behind closed doors in a smoke filled room, a deal was cut with A&M to become the 13th SEC team provided they exit the Big 12 the correct way.

Exactly! It slowed the media to a crawl and there hasn't been any name calling.

I just don't think they bring ANYTHING to the table.  I mean, how good is their gymnastics team?

They don't have a male gymnastics team do they?

They bring the Texas TV market and Texas recruiting to the table. This is about far more than just how good their football team is.

http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/26949/texas-am-inching-closer-to-the-sec

Quote
Texas A&M took one more step closer to joining the SEC.

Those attractive TV contracts will help with the visibility and finances shouldn't be a problem with the SEC distributing a record $220 million among its 12 member institutions this year. If you're keeping count at home, that's an average of $18.3 million per school. That is a 5.3 percent increase from the $209.0 million distributed to the schools in 2009-2010.

Cha-ching!

Obviously, adding another team will cut into that individual numbers for schools, but I doubt SEC members would agree to add another team without being assured they'll make as much as they made in the past each year. That could mean renegotiating TV contracts or pulling from a reserve, which is no doubt deep.

For the SEC, this would mean tapping into the Texas markets, getting the Dallas and Houston area, which means more people in front of TV sets ... and more money.

It also means SEC schools can dip into the Texas recruiting market, which SEC coaches have said would be a welcomed addition to their recruiting maps.

From reading their message board over the last several weeks, I have also learned that their intellectual prowess will raise the level of academics across the entire conference.  Us retarded rednecks in the SEC are lucky to have them.

No time like the present to welcome them to the SEC, if'n we accept 'em. Here ya go:

There were three Aggies huddled around each other at a local bar. All of a sudden, they jumped up and yelled,
"Yeah, 45! 45!" The bartender goes down to them and asks, "45? What are you guys so excited about?"
One of the Aggies speaks up: "We just finished a jigsaw puzzle. The box said 2 to 3 years, and we did it in 45 days!"

            He flew 22 missions.

how he lost it, he replied, "I just touched this big spinning thing here like thi...da#@! There goes another one!"

Did you hear about the Aggie that drove his pickup into the lake?
His dog drowned while he tried to get the tailgate down.

Why don't Aggies eat barbecue beans?
Because they keep falling through the holes in the grill.

I just don't think they bring ANYTHING to the table.  I mean, how good is their gymnastics team?

They bring a good segment of the Texas population to watch SEC football. Texas A&M has like 45,000 students and MANY alumni, including Gov. Rick Perry. Thi is a big positive for the SEC, TV-wise.

I understand the TV thing, but last time I checked, the SEC lead all TV ratings anyway.  People in Texas won't really be more interested in UGA vs USC East just because A&M is SEC.  Am I wrong in this? :dunno:

The Texas A&M fans in Texas will continue to watch Texas A&M.  The only difference is now all of those people will be watching an SEC game and the TV money will go to the SEC instead of the Big 12.  So the total number of people watching SEC games will go way up, and therefore the SEC will be able to renegotiate their TV contracts.

Let me try again using real numbers.  Right now the SEC states have about 60 million people in them.  Texas has about 25 million people in it.  With Texas A&M in the SEC, the potential audience for the SEC each week goes from 60 million to 85 million.

Texas A&M has a following like any other school.  Right now when those people watch A&M play on TV, the TV money goes to the big 12.  When they are in the SEC, that TV money will go to the SEC instead of the Big 12.
