The Alabama men's basketball team will host Kennesaw State in its 2015-16 season opener on Friday night, officially tipping off the Avery Johnson era in Tuscaloosa. There's a buzz surrounding the hoops program with Johnson at the helms.

The head coach tweeted around 3 p.m. Thursday that the game was 2,000 tickets away from being a sellout. And before the 7:30 p.m. tipoff on Friday, Johnson recalled his first head-coaching experience, which occurred more than 10 years ago.

Television: SEC Network +
- Play-by-play: Mick Gillespie
- Color analyst: Rick Moody

What a preempt for the football game Saturday afternoon. If you will notice who is doing the color commentating for the SEC Network, Rick Moody, the ex women's basketball coach at Bama. I haven't seen him in a long time so maybe I can get there early enough to chat with him a little.

By the way there is some good news for the womens team as well, they signed a 6'5' post player from Texas.

That's good news for the Women, J!

Wish I could be there to watch the men play tonight. I hope they fill Coleman up.

Yes, sounds like a good time.  Hope you can park a bit closer this week.  None of us there to screw up your schedule.

Alabama's Avery Johnson has had months to prepare and bring in a few of his own players before his college coaching debut.

That's not how it worked out when Johnson took over his first NBA team a decade ago...

He got scant hours' notice before his first NBA game as a head man when boss Don Nelson resigned and handed over the reins before a game against Charlotte late in the 2005 season. Johnson started 1-0 with a 104-93 win.

"Don Nelson passed me the whistle at about 11 in the morning and told the guys that I was going to be the next coach," he recalled Thursday. "Fortunately we won and went on a pretty good run the rest of that year."

Johnson went on to become the 2006 coach of the year after leading the Mavericks to their first appearance in the NBA Finals in his first full season.

I can promise you we will park closer tonight, the ladies play at 4:30 and we plan on seeing some of their game. That will allow us to beat the rush.

I like playing Kennesaw State in the opener than playing a DII school like Stillman or West Alabama. At least this game will count. Playing DII teams is like an exhibition game.

About 10 minutes to tip off and I have my AppleTV setup and ready to watch this game on SEC Network+ on the big screen.  It is about time WatchESPN worked for DirecTV customers.  I will use this a lot now that I can watch it on the TV instead of the computer.

Bama with 12 assists so far & Jimmy Taylor with 10 rebounds, must be a misprint.
