Only thing I recall about that game was Coach Bryant's tongue lashing of the caller who asked if "he'd do anything different" if he could play the game again.

What did he say?  "Yeah, I would win!"

No, he blew up and shouted, "Do you think I wanted to lose?"

Look how many mistakes it took for Alabama to lose that game:

Didn't read that article but... What does a game played 35 years ago have to do with the game this Saturday?  :dunno:

Hopefully nothing.

Maybe that was the last time they won.  :dunno:

It was memorable, because we gave it away.
And we were good enough that year to win a NC again, were ranked #1, and had a 28-game winning streak.
Bad things happen when you think you're too good to lose!

Mrs. J and I were at the game that fateful day and it was a long trip back home. Seems like there was an issue where Hollingsworth was trying to call a time out right at the end of the game to stop the clock and we didn't have any and everything then got very chaotic on the play and we fumbled. I also think that we had a couple of downs left when we ran the running play and could have spiked the ball to stop the clock and have the one last play left.

We all thought we would have to fight our way out of the stadium but luckily all of their fans ran onto the field to celebrate.

The issue, J, was NOISE.  It was back when the refs were supposed to stop the clock if the noise was so bad that the offense couldn't hear.  Alabama's QB (Jacobs)  kept signalling to the refs that they couldn't hear, but the refs didn't step in.  So the clock ran down to near zero, the ball was snapped, timing was off, and a good defensive hit jarred out the ball.  Alabama had driven to the 3-yard line before the fumble, looked like they were going to salvage a win, so the fumble was especially painful.

Just the Bullies' day.  Just like last year in Oxford, 2!   :-\

Thanks for clearing that up, it's been a few days since the game and the memory bank isn't as good as it used to be. I know the fans were going ballistic around us to get Hollingsworth to do anything to stop the clock.

One more question, wasn't that the last time that Bama played there?

You mean under Coach Bryant??

No, the games were played in Jackson in 1982 and 1984 also.  See:

I was thinking that they moved the games back to Oxford and Starkville after that game. Again, lots of cobwebs in the memory bank. Thanks for the info.

The QB that fumbled at the goal line as time expired was Don Jacobs from Scottsboro.
