Title: Check out this 13-foot Alabama alligator catch! Post by: Coach Hank Crisp on August 20, 2011, 06:41:30 AM link (http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/08/check_out_this_13-foot_alabama.html)
DALLAS COUNTY, Alabama -- Jamie Thomas of Selma and his friends caught this mammoth alligator at 8:45 p.m. last Saturday night in Dallas County, south of Selma. When brought to the scales the gator measured 13 feet, 1 1/2 inches long and weighed 604 pounds, Thomas said. Thomas holds one of 50 tags made available by the state of Alabama this year established in the new west-central region that encompasses the Alabama River drainage in Dallas and Wilcox counties and north of U.S. 84 in Monroe County. In actuality, that gator was caught in the Orlando area. My oldest brother lives in Kissimmee and said that this pic and article was in the paper down there. Post by: 2Stater on August 20, 2011, 07:34:44 AM "My brother on drugs" it is then, although it is highly unlikely to find any gator in the Alabama River, much less a 13 footer. ???

I used to work at a national wildlife refuge in Louisiana. A 13' alligator should weigh more like 800-900 lbs, I'd think. Maybe it was weighed wrong, or maybe it's not 13'. Or maybe I'm wrong. Huge alligator killed in west-central Alabama: 14 feet, 2 inches, 838 pounds! No pictures yet. I will look and see if MPR posts some later. http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/08/huge_alligator_killed_in_west-.html (http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/08/huge_alligator_killed_in_west-.html) Keith Fancher of Sterrett, Ala., killed the biggest alligator ever taken during any of Alabama's regulated hunts Friday night, a 14-foot, 2-inch, 838-pound monster. Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries biologist Chris Cook said Fancher captured and killed the record gator on the Alabama River near Portland Landing in Dallas County. The kill came during the opening night of the second split of the season in the new west-central hunt zone. Cook, who witnessed the weigh-in, said the alligator was so big it stretched a backing cable on the scales. The cable had to be replaced. Cook said Fancher's gator had a 65-inch girth around the stomach and measured 44 inches around the base of the tail. Title: Re: Check out this 13-foot Alabama alligator catch! I found a graph: (http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/7636/lengthvsweight.jpg) Title: Re: Check out this 13-foot Alabama alligator catch! The graph shows 850 lb average for 14 feet. Right on. The state held a lottery for alligator hunting. $7 to join. Only issued 295 permits for the season. 125 tags for the delta area south of Montgomery on the Alabama river and the rest issued closer to Mobile. |
