Former Alabama offensive lineman Barrett Jones on Thursday served as the keynote speaker at a luncheon to benefit the Firehouse Shelter, which provides homeless men in Birmingham housing, meals, counseling and other services. Jones threw in several Auburn jokes - he asked if any Auburn fans were in attendance at The Harbert Center, adding, "You know, it only takes a few to run the bunch." The son of a former Tide basketball letterman, Jones also talked about his transformation from a fourth grade basketball player who was six to eight inches taller than his teammates but failed to score a point during the season. Yet the heart of his message was "Mission, Ministry and Service Work," the event's title. Utilizing humor in his storytelling, Jones, now with the St. Louis Rams, explained why Alabama's 2010 BCS championship felt hollow, why he tides more than 10 percent of his earnings and the importance of giving time. He also discussed his reaction to Alabama's crystal BCS trophy being knocked off a display table and why he shoved AJ McCarron.
