Lost in the buildup to the title game yesterday was this intriguing nugget: LSU has been in contact with Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. The report, which comes courtesy of Ross Dellegner and Scott Rabalais, says the school has also reached out to Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Mel Tucker to fill the vacancy left by John Chavis' departure. Tucker, who was an assistant at LSU in 2000, seems like a logical fit. But the real stunner would be Smart, who has spent 10 seasons as an assistant under coach Nick Saban.
