Title: ??? - THE 4 PLAYOFF TEAMS (updated) and Bowl Pairings - ???
Post by: Chechem on December 07, 2014, 06:11:13 AM
This has turned into a mess for The Committee.  All of the 1-loss teams won, and FSU barely won.  Ohio State crushed Wisconsin.

So who are the 4, and in what order??  I think The Committee does what they planned to do all along, assuming they weren't forced into a change: 4 conference champs:

1. Alabama Crimson Tide
2. Oregon
3. Ohio State
4. Florida State

You??

Most of the sportswriters (in the NE and midwest) think OSU should be among the 4!

Big time!

I'm thinking that TCU and Baylor get left out, especially after a big Ohio State win.  Besides not having a championship game, Oklahoma's loss hurts them both.  That was among their best wins.  With Oklahoma State beating OU, the conference strength falls apart!

Ed Zachary! TCU and Baylor are out, even though they can't totally discount OSU's loss to Va Tech. But I think the committee will overlook that to send the message; "Conference champs only!".

I see it as:

1. Bama
2. Oregon
3. Ohio State
4. FSU

Money and tradition rule the day. PAC 12-Big10 matchup in the Rose Bowl, Bama and FSU playing close to home in the Sugar Bowl.

With no defenses, upsets are the norm for the Big 12.
Guess they fear a chance of their "best team" losing during the final week.   :dunno:

Craziest seeding is FSU.  They prolly shouldn't even be in the final 6, but no way the committee will leave them out.  But if they're in, who's out??

This we know for sure. By 1pm EST two teams, their school officials, their conference officials, their governors and US Sentators, their local media, and their fan bases, will be going full-out, apoplectic, bat-schize crazy, and this will be the second most entertaining thing that happens this weekend. I do not need to tell you what the most entertaining this was. Roll Tide.

If they weren't Florida St and the defending champs I don't think they'd get in. No way they get left out though, even if no one believes they're actually one of the four best teams.

The BCS was supposed to eliminate controversy and result in a clear champion. Then the four team playoff was supposed to eliminate controversy. I think 8 teams is inevitable, but then the arguments will be over who is 7 and 8.

True.  Consider it; Marshall got NO LOVE for being undefeated (when they were), but FSU gets into the playoffs by playing a weak schedule (poorly) and being undefeated.  Politics of being the defending champ (as you said), plus managing to escape the upsets.  Sad.

I'd love it if they were left out.  I'm sure some on the committee are voting that way, but no way they get left out.

Oddly enough, as inconsistent as FSU has been, I think they could beat Oregon and Ohio State. We will stomp a mud hole in their azz.

If you remember, the Big12 did have a championship game up until aTm and Missouri left for THE Southeastern Conference.  The Big12 now only has 10 teams and if I'm not mistaken I believe the NCAA doesn't allow a championship game for conferences with less than 12 members.

The Big 12 doesn't have a championship game because they don't have at least 12 teams, as required by NCAA rules.  There was a Big12 Championship game in the late 1990s, but when Colorado and Nebraska announced that they were leaving the conference in 2010, that put an end to the game.  The Big12 scrambled to add other members, WV and TCU, but TA&M and Mizzou moved to the SEC, and the Big12 currently has 10 teams.  OK and Texas weren't too much in favor of the game anyway, considering it an extra hurdle.

I don't like the message of "conference champs only."  Most years the SEC #2 can stomp a mudhole in several of the other conference champs.  This year for example,  Mississippi State could beat Ohio State, Florida State, TCU, Baylor, and Oregon.  For that matter, Ole Miss could whip most of them.  Auburn and LSU would give them competitive games and beat at least half of them.

If they are going to put such an emphasis on conference champs, then they need to have enough slots for all 5 conference champs and then 3 at large teams.  Eliminate one of the cupcake games and go back to 11 regular season games.

As for the 4 to make it in, I have no idea.  Alabama and Oregon are in for sure.  The others will know in about 20 minutes.

Just to be clear, I agree that the BEST 4 TEAMS should be in the playoffs.  But I think these clowns scheduled this playoff so the Big Ten could get in.  And that's what I think they'll do.

Without a doubt, were the BCS still in existence, we'd be playing FSU for the BCSNC.  But Oregon is better than FSU.  So maybe this playoff is working.

I think they should use the power index to determine the 4, not some group of representatives from the far reaches of the football kingdom.  Lots of lesser tribes among those far reaches!   :lol2:

Well we have said several times how we wanted OSU so they could learn a lesson. Well now we got them. So, let's see how we are going to stand up now. Personally I pray we win but I sure think it will be close. To beat a team 59-0 takes a good team. I do hope we don't walk in with the throw our helmet in the game and we win. This going to take a National Championship game every week. I do think if we win it will be Oregon who has wanted us for a long time. It is time to roll up our britches and go to work now. RTR!

Does anybody really think all 6 teams between Alabama and Mississippi State could beat Mississippi State?  I hope they play to their potential in the bowl game and blow out one of those teams.  The SEC teams that don't make it into the playoff need to play to establish dominance for next year's selection committee, unlike what we do when we don't make it in.
It looks like they are projecting Mississippi State v. TCU and Ole Miss v. Baylor.

Those two Mississippi schools are going to have their hands full, Big12 teams with something to prove.

The remaining non-playoff major bowls are great. OM has a chance to rep on the ACC. MSUs has a chance to show that TCU maybe didn't deserve to be in the top 4 after all.

AZ vs. Boise is okay if you like that sort of thing.
Then MSUn and Baylor

So, Big12 can make their case that they were underrated. SEC can make the case that the bias and hype aren't.

Interesting matchups. I would think TCU bashes Mich St in Dallas. If Good Bo shows up, I think Ole Miss beat Baylor. I also wonder if TCU and Baylor have letdowns since they didn't make the playoffs. I think maybe Miss St and Ga Tech could go either way. Pretty cool though, that Miss St is going to the Orange Bowl.

Bob Bowlsby (Big 12 Commissioner) was interviewed on "Mike and Mike" this morning.  When asked about the Big 12 adding more teams and a CG, he kept returning to their policy of "One True Champion" (everyone playing each other).  He said their rules about tie breakers (head-to-head wins) are for bowl pairings, and they'll continue to name co-champions if teams have similar records.

Bottom line: they ain't changing any time soon.  Their schedules for next year are set, and adding teams would only solve the problem 2-3 years from now (and after an 8-team playoff was in place - possibly).

RIP, Big 12.

You can bet the Big12 is already scrambling, but will never admit to it.

It is also pure coincidence that Florida State went back into the third spot, with Ohio State at fourth.

So we have two story lines for two playoff games:
(1) Saban v. Meyer, the renewed rivalry, and
(2) Last year's Heisman winner v. (probably) this year's Heisman winner.

Of course, none of this played any part in the committee's deliberations.

Jeff Long kept insisting yesterday that the lack of a Big 12 CG had no bearing at all, on their decision to leave out Baylor and TCU.

I was pretty sure they'f put OSU at 3 to create a PAC12/Big 10 Rose Bowl.
