Quote
When people hear the words "Whoa, Nellie!", they think of one man: Keith Jackson.

But if the retired broadcasting legend had his way, that wouldn't be the case. In fact, he's still trying to figure out how the two got so intertwined.

"I never did use it that much, just a couple times when Grease (Bob Griese) and I were (broadcasting) together," Jackson, now 82, said this week from his home in Sherman Oaks, Calif. "Bob Griese used it more than I did. I don't know how that thing got hung on me. The media likes to hang things on you and that was my bad luck, I guess."

Keith Jackson was great. I saw an iterview with him several years ago and he was asked what was the best game he ever called. He responded it was the 85 Iron Bowl that Bama won on the last play of the game with Van Tiffin's 53 yard field goal.

Lindsey Nelson was awesome too. He used to broadcast a lot of the NFL games and mostly the Baltimore Colts in the early days.

I'd love to hear Keith Jackson just one more time say "TOUCHDOWN AL-A-BA-MA!"

Sends chills up your spine. Best ever. Seems I remember not "whoa, Nellie" but "Oh, Howdy". His voice weakened as he got older (of course) but it still is part of what makes college football great and one of my best memories.

I had always heard that ABC pulled him from the SEC games because people were complaining about him being partial to Alabama.

He was the best at his craft. I don't see anyone on the horizon that could come close to taking his pacle.

I LOVED it when Keith called Bama games. I doubt that there will EVER be one as good as Keith Jackson

I liked Griese. I thought he and KJ worked well together and Griese didn't force his opinion on you like some try to do today.

Options are Bud Wilkinson, Ara Parseghian, Frank Broyles, and Bob Griese?  Anybody else?

I think I liked Bud Wilkinson best.  Classy guy who knew his football (and admired Coach Bryant too).

I forgot about Bud Wilkinson. He was good. Didn't care to much for Parseghian.

Agree, I forgot about CBW. He was definitely a knowledgeable, classy guy, But I think BG brought more entertainment to the broadcast booth.

Frank Broyles. He was also from Georgia. Keith Jackson grew up right on the AL-GA state line, so I'm guessing he listened to/grew up on a lot of Crimson Tide football on the radio. BTW, Keith Jackson was republican. ;)
