Title: Re: "Cyrus Jones knows Alabama CBs get 'ridiculed,' felt he proved something at Ole Miss" Post by: SUPERCOACH on October 08, 2014, 11:55:06 AM I was reading the comments and came across a gem. The facemask penalty was not a penalty after all. The 5 yard incidental facemask penalty was eliminated in 2008. You still can't tackle the guy by the facemask though, but that is not what happened here.
Quote Rule 9-1-2-q : Five-yard facemask foul eliminated No player shall twist, turn or pull the face mask or any helmet opening of an opponent. It is not a foul if the face mask or helmet opening is not twisted, turned or pulled. When in question, it is a foul. In the same spirit as the previous rule, the incidental facemask penalty has been eliminated. Another welcome change, it recognizes that incidental contact is not in itself dangerous, and therefore should not be penalized. http://www.californiagoldenblogs.com/2008/8/4/586707/new-rules-for-college-foot The facemask that occurred would have fallen under the incidental rule 9-1-2-q, which no longer exists as of 2008. Incidental facemask is no longer a penalty, and this was a textbook case of incidental facemask. So, good play Cyrus! Now, why didn't the bumbling broadcasters point that out during the game? Aren't they paid to know things like this? I'm just glad Vern didn't call him Miley Cyrus :lol2: Title: Re: "Cyrus Jones knows Alabama CBs get 'ridiculed,' felt he proved something at Ole Miss" Post by: Chechem on October 08, 2014, 12:19:19 PM I think it was more than incidental. The OM player's head was pulled 90 degrees, and (as Vern pointed out) his arm holding the ball came up, exposing the ball. Thus, the facemask pull likely led to the fumble.
Now I'm 100% Alabama, but also fair in assessment. Cyrus Jones made a great play on the ball when he got the chance. Unfortunately, he had grabbed and pulled the facemask. Really. The Ole Miss player was not carrying the ball properly anyhow, so maybe the fumble resulted from that too. I'll give Cyrus his due, but the refs missed the call. Thank goodness it wasn't reviewable. ??? ??? I am just confused about whether or not that is a penalty now. It was clearly a penalty under the old rule, but apparently that rule has been removed. I think the only penalty left is the 15 yard penalty that you get if you grab the facemask, don't let go immediately, and use it to help make the tackle. Which clearly is not what happened here. On Saturday I thought this should have been a penalty with no wiggle room at all. Now I am leaning toward "good play", and at worse a judgement call for the ref. My purpose for the post is simply to point out that this rule is not as clear cut as I thought it was during the game. The next time this happens it could be in the other teams favor, or it could end up being the difference in the outcome of the game. It would be nice to get clarification from the head of the SEC officials. :dunno: Title: Re: "Cyrus Jones knows Alabama CBs get 'ridiculed,' felt he proved something at Ole Miss" Post by: SUPERCOACH on October 08, 2014, 01:03:36 PM Now, why didn't the bumbling broadcasters point that out during the game? You do not have to tackle a player by the facemask to get a penalty. Here: Rule (A.R. 9-1-2 xv, NCAA football rules) states that “no player shall twist, turn or pull the face mask or any helmet opening of an opponent. It is not a foul if the face mask or helmet opening is not twisted, turned or pulled. When in question, it is a foul.” Even grabbing the ear opening and twisting can get a penalty. What was "eliminated" was the 5-yard walkoff for incidental grabbing. All violations are henceforth (harumph) 15 yards. The wording was confusing above. It said the "incidental facemask penalty has been eliminated". That does not mean that grabbing is not a penalty. It means that the 5-yard punishment for grabbing has been eliminated, as has any penalty if no 'twisting, turning, or pulling of the face mask' occurs. RTR!

I shouldn't believe everything I read on the internet. :-[ Title: Re: "Cyrus Jones knows Alabama CBs get 'ridiculed,' felt he proved something at Ole Miss" Post by: XBAMA on October 08, 2014, 01:40:59 PM the people at the NCAA rules site must be saying ...
