Title: Vandy Football
Post by: Marshal Dillon on September 07, 2014, 02:08:38 PM
I just watched most of the Vandy/Ole Miss game because I wanted to see what had happened to Vandy after some good years under Franklin. It is glaringly obvious that their new coach, Derek Mason doe not have a clue. The offense & the defense are lost and Mason looks lost on the sidelines, like Shula used to look. The offense is lacks any imagination and Mason seems to think he can run the football on a regular basis against SEC teams. Unfortunately for him, he does not have LSU, Alabama, or Georgia talent to achieve such a goal. Their 3 remaining cupcakes are UMass, Charleston Southern, & Old Dominion. I assume that will give them 3 wins. The only other chance for a win would be Kentucky, but even that is debatable right now. So they are looking at a best case of a 4-8 season, from a 9-4 season last year.

Vandy has not scored an offensive TD in two games. They were beaten bad by Temple and Ole Miss. Where are those 4 wins going to come from? I do not see them winning any SEC games. They have three cupcakes remaining but Temple beat them so nothing is a sure win.

Coaching matters.... even at Vandy.

Exactly. Now the question is, will Vandy cut its losses & fire Mason after just one year or will they expect a miraculous turnaround next year?

That's a tough call.  Mason is clearly inept.  Vandy will be lucky to have 3 wins this season.  What's his buyout?

I tried to watch some of their game but just couldn't watch for long. Surely he's not as bad of a coach as what I am thinking.

I watched most of it.  He must be inept.
Ole Miss didn't play especially well, but Vandy couldn't stop them or mount a threat themselves.  Vandy players looked lost, and the QB play was sad (better than last week, but not much).

As a comparison of new coaches, I watched part of the Texas game too.  Even though they lost badly, they looked more like a team than Vandy.  Texas lost, in part, because they lost 4 starters this week (including both QB and center) and dismissed some others 2 weeks ago.

I didn't watch any of the Texas game but you are right about Strong will struggle for sure this year at Texas. I'm not sure if Vandy lost any players from last years team or not, other than graduation, going pro, or discipline but they played like that have an all new team this year.

They are missing 2 of the biggest playmakers they've ever had in the 2 Jordans; Matthews and Rodgers. Franklin always had a wrinkle for the defense that they are sadly lacking this year. I don't know what kind of a recruiting year Mason had, but for his sake, it better have been a good one, and he'll need one next year too.

How does he explain this brewing disaster to his bosses? He wasn't replacing Ed Orgeron, Ears Whitworth,  John L. Smith, or some other loser coach. I don't see how they keep him, plus the fan base will be upon arms.

Something just doesn't seem right here. Shaw liked and believed in Mason. Did Franklin do any decent recruiting while he was at Vandy?

Being a good coordinator doesn't mean you will be a good head coach. Reference:

Charlie Weis
Bill Oliver
Lane Kiffin
Greg Robinson- Syracuse HC & former NFL defensive coordinator
Dave Wannstadt

This is just a few.
