Title: Screen pass
Post by: bama57 on September 06, 2014, 07:44:09 PM
It appears to me like all we need is a QB that consistently completes a screen pass and relies on the receivers to advance the play 30 to 40 yards?Looks to me like CNS and Lane got this figured out!

I'm curious to see how Bama does against Florida's defense.

I'm curious to see how Bama does against Florida's defense.

You mean a defense that has big athletic corners that will squat on those screens, pick them off, and run them back for TD's. Ya me too.

I hate to agree with Scarbinsky but we ay see a lot of Sims AND Coker this year. And, if they combine for 620 yards per game, that's a good thing! #+

I don't think we'll see so many of those passes against tougher defenses.  I think CLK has been using those passes to help get the QBs comfortable and build confidence.  SEC corners will pick those passes off and run them for six.

FAU appeared to be playing their corners 10 yards off the ball, which is why we kept calling those plays.  I'm sure if big SEC corners are "squatting", then I doubt we would even be calling those plays.

It's not like that play hasn't worked in the SEC (and Bama playbook) for years.
It works, especially when Christion Jones is flattening his man, putting Cooper one-on-one with the remaining DB.

I'd love to see Bama run the screen with D Henry swinging out to block for the WR.  Talk about flattening his man...  :o

Me too.
And (as an addendum) let me add that 'flattening the opponent' was from memory of yesterday's game.  Christion leveled his man on several plays.  The video I found was from year's past, to emphasize this isn't a Kiffin invention.

We have run the wide receiver screen consistently since CNS arrived. We ran it to Julio often.

I realize this is a play Bama has used for years.  But this year it is like Darby up the middle, a bit too predictable.

Hopefully bamaphil is right and these passes are to help the QBs adjust to live game action.

Otherwise Bama will end up like Ohio State, losing to a team that stacked the box, rushed 6, and dared the QB to throw down field.

Another thing about the screen pass: as CNS likes to say we are just taking advantage of the opportunities the other team gives us!

The WR screen is effective in certain situations. It is all about taking advantage of what the defense gives you.

I suppose I shouldn't complain too much about a record book passing performance.   ???

SEC Network analyst Andre Ware said Sims was quicker with his release on the screen plays, but what does the clock say? We're ultimately talking about fractions of a second from the time the ball is snapped to when they reach receivers in the step-back receiver screen. They're typically thrown with the snap on one hash and the throw going to the numbers on the far hash.

In those throws, Sims' passes reached receivers as fast as 1.78 seconds. Coker's quickest delivery took 1.83 seconds. These throws don't cover the exact same distance, so take a quick look at two screen passes for both Sims and Coker to judge the delivery. Neither quarterback has a short throwing motion either, but the naked eye says Sims is a shade quicker on average....

The debate continues...   :popcorn2:

Boy, talking about over-analysis.

It looks to me that JC is guiding the ball and not letting it go.
