Kiffin not out to rebuild Tide offense
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- You don’t hire Lane Kiffin without igniting certain expectations. There’s his baggage, of course, but there’s also the enduring sense that the former USC and Tennessee head coach still has a trick up his sleeve, that somewhere beyond the headlines there’s the former coordinator who helped the Trojans to a 23-3 record and the most productive offense in college football from 2005-06.

Nick Saban remembered that Lane Kiffin when he offered him the job of Alabama’s next offensive coordinator.

Nick Saban remembered ... the Lane Kiffin who brought a depleted Tennessee Vols team into Tuscaloosa in 2009 and nearly beat the eventual national champions. He remembered the Lane Kiffin he tried to hire away from USC three years earlier.

So what will this reincarnation of Lane Kiffin bring? The coordinator with a gift for coaxing the best out of his players or the head coach who was fired after three-and-a-half underwhelming years of guiding USC?

Everything is set up for him to succeed at Alabama. There’s the matter of finding two new starters on the offensive line and picking a quarterback, of course, but there’s also a wealth of talent across the board.

Jamos and I wondered yesterday how much of the new Bama offense will be Kiffin's offense, and how much would be Coach Saban's.

I only see down field changes because of what he use to do at USCw. He will line up and butt heads first to set up the pass play. I doubt we see full force until maybe middle season or on toward LSU. I have to say CLK has proved is a great offense mind he won championships at the Trojan teams. My main question is will his players play for him? RTR!

Yeah, I don't see CNS giving complete control of the offense to Kiffin.

With the team having no proven QB this year, I just don't see that big of a change in the offense. They can always put a few wrinkles in there from their existing offense with the quality of the backs and receivers they have and not have to make any wholesale changes. I think it will depend mostly on what the OL will permit them to do.

You're right, J. The "O" line is the key to the whole offense. I'm hoping and praying for better results from them than last year. The experience of Arie, Kelly and Shepard, along with all the good things I'm hearing about Cam Robinson, I'm pretty optimistic. I just hope Leon Brown is a quick healer and lives up to his potential.

Nick Saban, Head Coach, Alabama

“I’m trying to see if there is anything I can’t do at this point. That’s how Lane Kiffin happened. I was on a private space flight with Richard Branson, Gates and some oil guy from Kuwait, anyway, they dared me to hire Lane, just to see if anyone at Alabama would even bat an eye or tell me no. So I tried it and here he is. After he got here I’ve realized why he’s failed everywhere he’s gone. He’s a total clown. So yeah, looking back it wasn’t the smartest move. These are the consequences of unmitigated power.”
