Title: Spencer Turnbull Selected in Second Round of 2014 MLB Draft
Post by: pmull on June 06, 2014, 09:20:55 AM
We are going to miss Red Bull. He gave us a good start every time he was on the mound. Too bad we did not score runs when he pitched. Several times we scored 1 run or less when he took the loss.

First time we have had a player drafted on day 1 since 2010. I heard a scout talking him him and said a 2nd round pick would get a signing bonus of $800K.

He has a high ceiling. He is 6-3 230 lb. He has a mid 90 fastball with a lot of movement. He walks a lot of batters. If he can get correct his control issues and work on his slider he will be with the Tigers before long.

Alabama right handed pitcher Spencer Turnbull was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the second round of the 2014 First-Year Major League Baseball Draft. Turnbull, who was the 63rd selection overall, he is the first player from the 2014 Alabama NCAA Tournament team selected in this year's draft.

As a junior, Turnbull finished the 2014 season with a 5-7 record with a 2.22 ERA. He had 61 strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .192 batting average, allowing just 61 hits in a team-high 93.1 innings pitched.

What other Juniors will go pro?

I think Ben Moore will. Catcher Wade Wass and pitcher Justin Kamplain should get drafted and may go. Jon Keller was having a great year until he was supended for the USCe series and then had some type of injury that kept him from pitching down the stretch. Austen Smith is a senior and should get drafted.

Any others?

It sounds like they can get drafted, and then opt to turn down the offer and stay in school if they don't like how things worked out.  Is that right?  I know they can't do that in football.

You are correct.

I like MLB rules. You can be drafted out of high school. If you go to college you can not be drafted again until your junior year or 21 years of age. You can enter the and return to college as long as you not not sign with an agent or receive any money. Basketball and football should adopt these same rules.

Being picked in the 2nd round of the MLB draft is HUGE! Since thee are 40 rounds, a pick in the first 3-5 rounds is the equivalent of a 1st round pick in the NFL. Plus, pitchers are a giant premium in baseball.

The 40 rounds is why baseball rules are different.  With less picks, football and basketball want to make sure the drafted player actually plays.

Congrats to Spencer. The Detroit Tigers will be a good team for him. He won't know how to act, getting run support.  :lol2:

Since 2012 MLB has assigned draft pick values.

Spencer Turnbull is in line to be paid $900,600 for the 2nd round 63rd pick.

Ben Moore is not as fortunate. He will receive $152,700 for hid 8th round 254th pick.

Turnbull will go pro. Moore has a decision to make. He could opt to return for his senior season and attempt to increase his draft value.

Alabama commit Matt Morgan (catcher from Thorsby) will sign with the Blue Jays. He was selected with the 114th pick. The assigned value for that slot is $458,000.

Good luck to the kid. I would have loved to have him for three years but I understand his decision.

Junior Justin Kamplain picked in 18th round with the 542nd pick. The money can not be great at this pick. I hope he comes back for his senior year and improves his draft stock.

Quote
Alabama junior left-handed pitcher Justin Kamplain was selected by the New York Yankees in the 18th round of the 2014 First-Year Major League Baseball Draft, with the 542nd selection overall.

Kamplain finished his junior season at Alabama with a 7-3 record and a 2.90 ERA in 15 appearances, all as a starter. His career-high seven wins led the Tide in 2014, while his 69 strikeouts in in 90 innings also led the club, while holding opponents to a .205 batting average.

Senior 1B Austen Smith drafted in 33rd round by Marlins.

I hoped the senior would be drafted sooner. He had a very good year for us.

I also thought he would have been drafted higher. He is a solid player.

A scouting report I saw had Smith as the 67th best 1B in the draft. Kentucky, Miss. State, & Vandy had top ten 1B candidates.

The pro scouts see something about him they do not like I guess. I did not think he would be an early round pick. I expected rounds 12-20. He had a solid glove at 1B and was one of the best hitters in the SEC. He led Alabama in most hitting stats. I find it hard to believe there is 66 better prospects at 1B but I am a loyal biased fan and not a scout.

Quote
The Pensacola, Fla., native finished his senior season at Alabama with a team-high .316 batting average, while tying for the team lead with 39 RBI. Smith, who was a Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List honoree, posted a team-high .487 slugging percentage, that included six home runs and 14 doubles (second on the team). He also led the 2014 Tide with a .426 on base percentage with a team-high 29 walks and he was hit by a pitch 13 times.
