Post by: Catch Prothro on June 03, 2014, 07:11:18 PM
Much better start so far.  Players at 2nd and 3rd with one out in the first inning.

Are there no other pitchers on the Tide staff? Traina is starting her THIRD straight game. She threw 114 pitches last night. WTH!!!

And Traina gets hammered by Florida in the second inning.  Florida 5 Bama 1

Still only one out.  Littlejohn going in.  But it might be too late.

Florida outfielder drops the ball out of her glove.  Called 3rd out.  Looked like a drop to me.

It appeared she caught it and was taking it out of her glove to throw to the other fielder.

MLB rules say that if a player drops the ball while transferring from glove to throwing hand, then it's a hit.  I don't know what women's softball rules say.  But from the video shown, that would have been the best case scenario for the Florida outfielder, either that our it bounced out of her glove.   :dunno:

Here's the softball rule:

"In establishing a valid catch, the fielder shall hold the ball long enough to prove the ball is securely held and/or that the release of the ball is voluntary and intentional. If the player drops the ball after reaching into the glove to remove it or while in the act of throwing, it is a valid catch. "

Error on the Coach for that one.

We have really choked on some scoring opportunities. At least 6 left on base, 2 in the first & bases loaded in the 4th. We had runners on 2nd & 3rd with no outs in the 4th and we could not do anything. I feel like I'm watching the Braves.

I don't get it, it seems that the strategy by Murphy was to have Traina pitch every game and inning, no matter what. I hope pmull or Jamos or somebody read this and can maybe explain what's going on. Littlejohn replaced Traina and she pitched very well and gave up only one run in over 4 innings of work. UF & Bama only had 3 pitchers each on their roster. My guess, 2 starters & 1 reliever.

Traina is our best pitcher. If we had won Game 2 i think CPM would have started her in Game 3. Softball is not like baseball. Pitchers often pitch 2-3 games in a row. Two years ago Traina pitched all three games against Oklahoma. In recent WCWS I remember a pitcher from Washington and Arizona doing it as well. A girl from Kentucky had throw over 1000 pitches in the regional and super regional without any relief. CPM gave her a lot of rest this year saving her for tournament time. I think CPM thought our best chance to win the championship was to ride Traina as far as she would take us in this series.

Florida is a very good team. They did not back into this championship... they earned it.

I agree Florida was the better team, and congratulations to them for the win.  Jamos posted separately.  While Traina may have been Bama's best pitcher, Florida batters were well prepared for her, and they had her number.  I think a change of pace can be good.  Sometimes the right choice isn't the best player, but the best player for the circumstances.  And that's all I really have to say about that.

This team came together and improved during the season, thanks in large part to the younger players.  Next year we'll likely be in the WCWS again with these young studs.
