Mountain Brook senior Buddy Pell won't receive the first penny in athletic scholarship money, but he won't be the typical glorified practice body in Tuscaloosa.

The lure of the Crimson Tide program was strong enough for the 5-foot-11, 190-pounder to forgo a full football scholarship to Jacksonville State.  Pell's likely home will be with the safeties and on special teams in Tuscaloosa.

Does that last name seem familiar?

Charley Pell, his grandfather, was the head coach at the University of Florida from 1979-1984. ...

Maybe he plans to form a labor union!   :lol2:

Seriously, this kid is carrying our flag.  He's one of us (bleeds crimson, all Alabama, and wishing for more talent -   ).

Being from Mountain Brook probably makes it a little easier to pass up a full scholly to walk on at another school. :dunno:

Regardless of where he is from, that is guts and loyalty right there.

Yep. This team needs lots of that. Bet that guy will work his butt off and and set a great example for the rest of the team.

What a poorly written article.  No mention was made that Buddy's grandfather played football for coach Bryant from 1961-1963 and was an all SEC guard and defensive tackle in the "play both ways" era and a member of a National Championship team.  When I hear Charlie Pell's name, I think of his success as a player at Bama, not that he coached at Florida.   Besides all that Charlie was a classmate of mine.

Having said all that, I'm happy to have this young Pell at the University of Alabama.
