Title: Jeopardy has too many artsy questions
Post by: ssmith general on June 14, 2011, 06:29:30 PM
Ever notice those idiots always miss the science questions?  I could smoke those fools at trivial pursuit.

Discuss.

And the answer is:

"Where could I smoke fools?"

My daughter is very good at Jeopardy. Of course, she is an art major. I think the people that do well on Jeopardy read all the time. I'm not talking sport pages, tractor catalogs or beer labels. I mean real books.

Maybe skip a Saturday of watching football to memorize the names of all the Popes and the Kings/Queens of England and you'll level the playing field. HTH

That and read 2/3 of the books in the library. Avoid the 1/3 that interests you.

If it isn't history, baseball or football, I'm done. I remember growing up they had general categories like Sports, History, and Science. Now they have some weird things like Famous Argentinian Weavers.

sorry, but reading is antiquated.  Too slow, not enough information.

I am personally offended by this and heartily disagree. I just read a new book about this new thing called the World Wide Web. You wouldn't believe what this guy said you will be able to do with it.

SERIOUSLY though, as a history major, reading is pretty much my bread and butter.

Don't make the mistake of tuning in during championship week. I think I went 3 days without getting one correct.

Sorry to you, my general, but I continue to disagree. Respectfully so, but vehemently disagree nonetheless.

Reading isn't my bread and butter but I cannot imagine a day without reading. I read as much as I can. Lights do not go out at night without at least a chapter being read :)

I think the General's disinterest in reading explains a lot.

Don't leave it at that, big boy. If you have something to say, be a man and speak up.

It is self explanatory, if you read more you would understand.

My point was that it is antiquated as a way to take in information, in other words, there are better ways to learn.   Plus it's one of those fun things to say and get peoples reactions.   I understand reading for enjoyment.  The girl likes to read before bed too.

Well, I'll agree that Google has banished reference books. I have several encyclopedias that I haven't opened for months. I remember when encyclopedia salesmen used to knock on the door. And the local library hardly draws a crowd. But I do buy books that appeal and aren't on the Web. Good old Amazon.

Well, I can't agree, but I won't argue. I respect you opinion general and promise that if you go before me, I will read your obituary either in the paper or online, and I won't hold it against you if you don't read mine.  ;) :D :P

What other ways are there to learn besides reading? Sign language, mind reading, dream interpretation? Just wondering.

 ???

The best way is hands on.  Then there is video, interactive computer programs, powerpoint presentations, etc.

This part of my argument isnt that much of a stretch.  Whats funny is how defensive everyone is about reading, lol.

I don't disagree with that. I can only speak for my line of work (archives/history) and tell you that much of what I do is centered around reading texts. Everything, though, requires some amount of reading, even if it is just short paragraphs, whether they are on the computer, in powerpoint programs, or even on videos occasionally. I assume that your are referring to reading entire books on a subject, though.
