Title: Auburn hires Bruce Pearl as men's basketball coach Post by: pmull on March 18, 2014, 11:20:44 AM Bruce Pearl is a good hire for the boogers. He can coach and promote the program. This is going to make Antony Grant's job more difficult.
Quote Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs has made a big splash by hiring former Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl as the Tigers' new men's basketball coach, according to the school. http://www.al.com/auburnbasketball/index.ssf/2014/03/auburn_hires_bruce_pearl_as_me.html#incart_river Title: Re: Auburn hires Bruce Pearl as men's basketball coach Post by: Hannibal Lecter, MD on March 18, 2014, 11:38:57 AM Sigh...this puts a lot more pressure on Bill Battle.
Title: Re: Auburn hires Bruce Pearl as men's basketball coach Post by: 2Stater on March 18, 2014, 12:36:44 PM Pearl will be gone in a year or two, once a better program extends him an offer. That's providing he doesn't act a fool like he did at UT.

CBB has a year before he has to make another decision. Title: Re: Auburn hires Bruce Pearl as men's basketball coach Post by: Chechem on March 18, 2014, 02:16:18 PM Pearl can coach bb.
It's a challenge coaching Aubs, but he can do it if anyone can. We're screwed. :tinfoil: Title: Re: Auburn hires Bruce Pearl as men's basketball coach Post by: Marshal Dillon on March 18, 2014, 02:33:13 PM Pearl will be gone in a year or two, once a better program extends him an offer. We are still at 109 consecutive wins over the cow-chasers in gymnastics... 8)It's a challenge coaching Aubs, but he can do it if anyone can. We have a nice coach who is a decent fellow. All Pearl has done is go to 6 straight NCAA Tourneys at UT, beat a #1 ranked Memphis, beat National Champion Florida twice in their run to the NC, defeated #1 Kansas, #2 Kentucky, & other high profile victories in his stint as UT coach. Plus, Coach Grant is a really nice person and good guy. Pearl is toast! :dog: Title: Re: Auburn hires Bruce Pearl as men's basketball coach Post by: pmull on March 18, 2014, 03:28:25 PM I thought Barbee was an excellent hire for them 4 years ago. He was a hot young coach and they were moving into a new facility. It did not work out. The last 7 barn coaches dating back to Joe Eaves in 1949 have not had a career winning record in the SEC. Auburn is a tough place to coach basketball.
Only time will tell how Pearl will do for them. He is taking over a program that does not have any talent. They lose their best players from this year. They did not have a good early signing class and Pearl can not recruit until August 24. It will take time for him to get some SEC caliber players. Auburn has never had a better basketball program than Alabama in my lifetime. Maybe a year here or there but overall we have always been better. If, and it is a big if, Pearl gets things going he will be gone in a New York minute to a higher profile school. Pearl is a good coach but nobody else wanted him this year. The barn is taking a risk with this hire. Pearl is the first coach ever to be hired with a "show cause" in place. They are banking on a high risk = high reward. Sonny Smith had a good team back in the 80's with the 2 Chucks (Person & Barkley). I believe it was 1988 or 89 when Louisville won the NC with Pervis Ellison, Auburn gave them all they could handle in the NCAA tourney. Realistically, Auburn probably had the 2nd best team in the country at the time. That's the only time that I can remember an Auburn basketball team ever being relevant. Excellent post and accurate especially about the talent level at Auburn and their overall program. If by some miracle Pearl could build the program up in say 3 years, he would be 57/58 years old. I am not so sure he would bolt to start over again, unless it was a fantastic opportunity like Ohio State, Kentucky, Florida, Michigan, etc. Title: Re: Auburn hires Bruce Pearl as men's basketball coach Post by: pmull on March 18, 2014, 04:01:16 PM I thought Barbee was an excellent hire for them 4 years ago. Auburn has had a few good teams. They have been to 8 NCAA Tournaments. Five of those under Sonny Smith. But Wimp Sanderson owed Sonny Smith. Smith had an overall SEC record of 84-114. Wimp was 132-82. Cliff Ellis had a good team in 1999. They were a # 1 seed and lost in the second round. Every team in the SEC has been to the NCAA Tournament since Auburn's last time. Here is a guy with charisma, energy, a proven winner & recruiter. If he flops at Auburn then the Barn is truly an awful place for BB.

It is Coach Grant's job to keep it that way by getting us back to the top tier of the SEC.
