Title: C.M. Newton: Leave Anthony Grant alone and he'll 'get it right' at Alabama
Post by: pmull on February 25, 2014, 11:13:58 AM
CM Newton stills carries a lot of weight with the Alabama Basketball program. His support mattered to Mal Moore. I imagine it does to Bill Battle as well.

I am beginning to think CAG will be back next year.

Quote
"We're all instant gratification, we all want the hurry-up fix," Newton said in a speech to the Birmingham Tip-Off Club today. "If we leave this guy alone, Anthony Grant, leave him alone for a couple years, he'll get it right. He's a da#@ good coach. He knows what it takes to win. If I were his AD, I would leave him alone simply because I can put my head on my pillow each night and go to sleep knowing he isn't going to cheat and he'll have good discipline in his program."

Wow, what a shock! A former coach supporting a current coach! CM says give him a couple of years to fix things, does he not know that Grant has had FIVE years to "fix" things? CM Newton was a great coach for the Tide, but this is to be expected since no former coach will EVER talk bad about another coach.

FYI. CM Newton did not support Mark Gottfried. In fact, he recommended he be fired mid season and he was.

If I was a betting man, I would bet we give him at least 2 more years. I HOPE so anyway. I am proud of the fact that he tries to run one of the cleanest programs in the nation. Plus we all know as Bama fans we are going to always have the complainers in our fan base, and at times I am one of those  :-[

Is pointing out the obvious "complaining?" Things like the constant poor outside shooting the last 5 years, the poor rebounding, lack of an offense, etc., etc.

So it's complaining to point out facts and the truth? Correct? Do you have a problem with facts or do you prefer fantasy? Are you happy with the results of the last five years? Just wondering. Plus, how many times do we have to hear about what a good person Grant is when talking about his coaching?

 ???

Honestly, when I read CMN's comment I wondered what team he had been watching?

Personal Trivia:  Coach CMN came to Bama while I was in school.  One of his first decisions was to keep one of the ass't coaches named...Wimp Sanderson.

Yes, it is.  Seriously MD, you have complained about Coach Grant all season and it really doesn't matter whether what you say is true or not.  You have been incessant with your complaining and I for one wish you would realize that you will not have an impact on whether he is retained or released and let it go.  Everyone on this board is well aware of your stance regarding our basketball program. EVERYONE!  As far as facts or fantasy?  Well there is no hiding from his winning/losing statistics and I really don't hear anyone arguing about that.  That is indisputable.  The issue of this particular thread is CMN's comments regarding Grant and not his current record.  You have made your opinion painfully clear.  How many times do we have to hear how horrible he is?

I believe CAG will be back next year. Not because of the $5M buyout but because the administration believes he is the coach to get our program to where we need to be. We will have a totally different team next year with 5 new players coming in. Two of the players are proven transfers. I hope MD and all the naysayers will back CAG if he is retained as out coach.

Assuming he is back I hope we see a few changes. I would like to see a new assistant hired that can help develop our big guys and help get us some points in the paint. We need to get a full 13 man roster of scholarship players. We need to beat some top teams and learn to win on the road.

CAG needs to promote the program. CM Newton mentioned this in the article. He need bigger crowds that not only show up but are excited about being there. I don't know how to do this but I am sure there is a few dollars in the budget to hire a consultant that knows what they are doing to help. Ask Coach Patterson how she packs the place for gymnastics. She promotes her program as good as any I have seen. Ultimately winning will put butts in seats but CAG needs to do more to promote the program.

"He has not done a great job of marketing and promoting himself and the program.

MD complains because he is a big fan and highly disappointed in the team's performance.  That's understandable.  This year was supposed to be the year, with Bama's group of juniors and Releford at point.  Several teams have beaten Bama by stopping Releford and daring the other players to score -- what will happen next year when Releford is gone?

I for one don't mind giving Grant another year, but I'm skeptical about seeing much improvement given the track record.  To say I'm optimistic would be an overstatement.  But I'm not one to push for immediate gratification either.  Grant has had enough time to "learn on the job," so next year better be the year.

It most certainly is when it is spewed almost constantly for the entire season...

And the opposite of that is never finding fault, saying how things could be worse, how tough the competition was (even when they are not), failing to ignore past history and the trends associated with that history, and providing a never ending stream of excuses.
