Title: Alabama Basketball & Defense Post by: Marshal Dillon on February 18, 2014, 07:52:35 PM Good article. I guess it's the player's fault.
 Quote The Tide allows nearly 10 more points a game this season and rank nowhere near the nation's elite. The 67.9-point allowance ranks No. 114 nationally after last season's team gave up 58.4 a game. That ranked 17th. http://www.al.com/alabamabasketball/index.ssf/2014/02/ranked_in_top_10_two_years_ago.html#incart_river_default Title: Re: Alabama Basketball & Defense Post by: Marshal Dillon on February 18, 2014, 09:41:32 PM Tide is scoring 68.6, 252nd in NCAA, & giving up 67.9 points a game, 114th. That helps explain our 10-15 record, one of several reasons.

We have had 5 years of problems scoring under Coach Grant, so I don't know how he can fix it. ??? Title: Re: Alabama Basketball & Defense Post by: ricky023 on February 19, 2014, 11:14:12 AM I see such a split. Some says fire him, and some say keep him. I am a fence rider I guess. I really do not know which would be the best. I do believe firmly if you keep doing the same over and over with the same material, that is insanity. The other side of the coin is if he is released then I would think Coach Battle would go after Rick Petino or some one of that caliber. If we are serious about playing with the NCAA tourney people. JMHO. RTR!
Title: Re: Alabama Basketball & Defense Post by: pmull on February 19, 2014, 11:29:20 AM I am not sure why our defense is so poor this year. The NCAA is enforcing hand checks and calling silly fouls but that goes both ways. Overall scoring is up due to more foul shots but that does not answer the question why we are so far down in the national rankings.
Assistant Coach Dan Hipsher left after last season to take the head job at Texas Pan America. I have wondered if we are missing him. Antoine Pettway was promoted to replace him. I do not expect CAG to be let go at the end of the year. I think his job performance will be reviewed and it will be made clear that losing records and not consistently making the NCAA's are not acceptable. I expect a change on the coaching staff. I think we need an offensive minded assistant that can also recruit and develop inside players. I'm not worried about our defense long term. We have to do a better job with our offense. If I was in Bill Battle's position I would give him an ultimatum similar to the one Mal Moore gave to Mike Shula. I would give him another year provided he brings in a top assistant with new ideas. You can not kept doing the same things and expect different results. I like CAG but I am tried of not going to the NCAA and I hate losing. I think he deserves one more year but he is on a very short leash and his seat is very hot. Dunn left Gottfried's staff. The team was never the same after his departure. Also, the most disturbing thing to me is the EXACT same problems have been going on under Grant for the last 5 years but he seems either unwilling or unable to change what he is doing. Very confusing. Good solid observations by you and I agree totally. |
